New street design on Rainier Ave S this weekend

This weekend (September 12-13), we're redesigning the lanes between on Rainier Ave S between Hillman City and Rainier Beach to improve safety and keep the bus moving.

What to expect during installation

*	Parking restrictions during the work

*	Please follow the no parking signs to allow space for crews to stripe the lanes and post signage

*	Most work will be during the day on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday, September 13

*	Crews will complete some signage and finishing touches early next week

*	Crews expect to take one lane at a time on Rainier to complete the work

What will the street look like?

We will restripe Rainier between S Kenny St and S Henderson St to <https://seattle.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ddc6bc95b250ba3b1e1b55986&id=12dba0386e&e=abadae8940> add bus lanes and a center turn lane. This will reduce the number of general purpose travel lanes from 2 to 1 in each direction.

Why reduce the number of travel lanes?

Reducing the number of general purpose travel lanes has been proven to reduce speeding – a key factor in the frequency and severity of crashes. The <https://seattle.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ddc6bc95b250ba3b1e1b55986&id=c240faad3e&e=abadae8940> World Health Organization concluded that a 5% reduction in average speed can decrease traffic fatalities by 30%. Also, speeding causes collisions and collisions cause 25% of traffic congestion.

Adding a center turn lane will improve business and neighborhood access and adding bus lanes will keep buses moving. Rainier Ave S has some of the highest bus ridership of anywhere in the city. After the bus lanes go in, the bus will be more reliable for the 12,600 people who ride it each day (on average). We'll closely monitor speeds and vehicle counts on and near the project area and make changes as needed.
