Greater Seattle Chapter Meeting

Join us for our monthly in-person chapter meeting, Saturday October 22nd,
2022

We will be meeting at Razzi’s Pizzeria

8523 GREENWOOD AVE. N.

SEATTLE, WA 98103 Beginning at 11:00 am.

Razzi’s Pizzeria is on the #5 bus line.



This is a reminder that for the foreseeable future, we had to change the
date of our chapter meeting to the fourth Saturday of the month because we
are not able to meet at our intended place downtown. Razzi’s has the space
for us, but so as not to have confusion with another group also meeting on
the third Saturday, we had to move the date. We had a well-attended chapter
meeting last month, which is when the official  vote took place.

In addition to our usual chapter agenda items, we will be focusing on
preparing for the upcoming state convention, November 4-6! Come get all of
your questions answered and see how you can help take part in making this
the best convention we’ve had yet!

We will also talk about continued chapter fund raising this next year.
Finally, we will talk about the holiday party happening on December 10th,
20223.

Our recent chapter meetings have been full of renewed enthusiasm, so let’s
keep that going!

This is also a reminder to attend the upcoming White Cane walk, happening
this Saturday, from 9:00-12:00. Several of our chapter members will be
attending and helping out at our table, but we’d love as many of you to
attend.

Coordinator). She spoke to the chapter last month about this walk and we are
all excited about partnering with her!

Let’s educate Seattle about the White Cane and how we can use it as a tool
for independence!

Wondering what to do

with that old cane you no longer use in the closet? Is that drawer of used
canes

collecting dust and taking up space? Donate your old canes to the “You Cane
Give”

program. And turn that old cane into newfound independence for individuals
in need.

What is White Cane Day?

History: On October 6,1964, a joint resolution of the Congress, HR 753, was

signed into law authorizing the President of the United States to proclaim
October 15 of

each year as “White Cane Safety Day”. President Lyndon B. Johnson signed
the first

White Cane Safety Day proclamation within hours of the passage of the joint
resolution.

While the white cane does keep blind people safe (because drivers and other

pedestrians can easily see it), it is also a tool that blind people use to
explore and

navigate the environment. For this reason, the emphasis of White Cane Safety
Day has

shifted over time away from safety, and toward independence and equality.

In 2011, White Cane Safety Day was also named Blind Americans Equality Day
by

President Barack Obama.
