Organizing 101: How to Build People Power

Want to make a change in the world, but not sure where to begin? In this workshop, we’ll learn the basics of grassroots organizing and coalition building for powerful, people-first campaigns. This workshop will be valuable for safe streets advocates, but also applicable for other groups or causes you’re a part of.

 

Business Outreach: Cultivating Allies and Mitigating Concerns

Local businesses are a vital backbone of every neighborhood in Seattle, and a thriving business district is essential to any walkable or bikeable community. Yet often, local businesses are pitted against safe streets or urbanist projects in public media. In this workshop, we’ll learn practical steps for bridging this gap, cultivating allies, and mitigating concerns within local business communities.

 

From Idea to Asphalt: How to Influence an SDOT Project

How does the Seattle Department of Transportation approach a street project? Learn about the phases of SDOT project delivery and how to advocate for change each step of the way. This workshop will include analyzing a retrospective case study and how advocates shaped it to improve the final outcome for people using the street.

 

Tactical Urbanism and Placemaking: Small Actions, Big Impact!

What is tactical urbanism, and why and how can it be used to push for or create change? This workshop will give a general overview of tactical urbanism and placemaking, then dive into case studies, learning key elements that made projects successful (or not!).


After that we’ll wrap things up with time to connect with other people who are passionate about making a difference in our city over a provided lunch.
