Seattle’s Waterfront (Dzidzilalich) stands on the lands and shared waters of the Puget Sound Coast Salish People, whose ancestors resided here since time immemorial. With gratitude, we honor the land, the water and its peoples.
The <https://waterfrontseattle.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=74d6f1b443703d02c3eb093c5&id=9787ef9c60&e=68d44d81d8> opening of Pier 58 today brings us to a near-completion of Seattle’s multi-year transformation of the 20-acre Waterfront Park along Seattle’s downtown shoreline. If you haven’t already, put on your marine-themed attire and join us at Pier 58 between 4 and 8 PM today for a free community celebration!
MEET US AT WATERFRONT PARK
ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 6,
FOR THE PARK’S GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION!
The City of Seattle and Friends of Waterfront Park invite the region to a once-in-a-generation celebration of Seattle’s new Waterfront Park on September 6! We will be honoring the unparalleled efforts, partnerships, and investments it has required to get to this moment with festivities that are sure to speak to everyone.

Be part of Seattle history as we celebrate completing the largest collection of public projects in Seattle since the 1962 World’s Fair! This all-day, free event will bring together over 100 local artists, performers, cultural leaders, and community organizations for a sweeping experience that stretches across the full Waterfront Park and beyond.
With over 60 performances and community activations across 10 themed zones, this unprecedented event will reflect the vibrant spirit of Seattle through immersive art, youth dance ensembles, storytelling, live music, food, processions, and pop-up moments of delight. From lantern-lit parades and high-energy drill teams to dog-friendly activities, and hands-on workshops for all ages, the celebration invites residents and visitors to explore every corner of the park and to see themselves reflected in it.
The full schedule of events and performances will be released in early August at <https://waterfrontseattle.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=74d6f1b443703d02c3eb093c5&id=4a7da48f8d&e=68d44d81d8> https://waterfrontparkseattle.org/grand-opening/.
OVER 15 YEARS IN THE MAKING
Waterfront Park is an expansive 20-acres from Pioneer Square to Belltown and reimagines the former footprint of the Alaskan Way Viaduct with new green spaces, public amenities and publicly sited artworks. It is the result of the shared vision of residents and civic leaders, brought to life by the hard work and dedication of thousands of people including community partners, contractors, and city staff.
While we are thrilled to celebrate the opening of Pier 58, we are not quite complete with all Waterfront Seattle Program improvements. We continue to work on the Bell Street Improvements project, which enhances the connection between Waterfront Park and Belltown and is anticipated to be completed with some final touches later this year. There are also several publicly-sited artworks – by Shaun Peterson, the MTK Matriarchs and Ann Hamilton – as well as interpretive and cultural wayfinding signage, that are planned to be installed by the end of the year.
Waterfront Park was designed and built by the City’s Office of the Waterfront, Civic Projects and Sound Transit and will be managed as part of a public-private partnership between the City’s Seattle Center and Friends of Waterfront Park.
We’ve gone through more than 15 years of design, construction and engagement ever since the decision was made to build the SR-99 deep-bored tunnel and demolish the viaduct. We are thrilled to celebrate the completion of this iconic new park on Seattle's waterfront, providing Seattleites with new public spaces to create memories along our shoreline for generations to come! We invite you to take a look at the photos below to take a trip down memory lane.
