YOUR VOICE MATTERS

Shape the U District for Next 20 Years

Every decade, Seattle opens a formal process to plan the future of a neighborhood from the ground up. That process is happening right now, and the stakes for the University District are unusually high.

The U District Regional Center Plan will set binding policy on the questions the 2017 rezone left unresolved:
• Will The Ave finally get the investment and protection it deserves?
• Will development projects build affordable housing here, not elsewhere?
• Will the 5-acre open space deficit get addressed with real acreage and funding?
• Will the people most at risk of displacement actually shape the outcome?

Planning processes tend to reflect the voices that show up. The U District is 39% low-income, 87% renter, 51% BIPOC, 64% car-less, and home to one of the most diverse small business communities in Seattle. Those voices belong at the center of this process, not at its margins.

Public Workshop

Tomorrow (April 23), City planners will be at <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-y/> U Heights Auditorium from 6-8 pm to hear directly from residents, workers, students, and visitors. Come learn what is being considered, share what matters to you, and connect with neighbors who are asking the same questions.

If you cannot make it in person, the City's <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-j/> online survey is open now until May 4, available in English, Chinese, and Spanish.

And if you know someone who rents in one of the new towers, runs a small business near The Ave, or has felt the pressure of this neighborhood changing around them, bring them with you or forward this email. The draft plan will not arrive until fall, and what gets written between now and then depends on who speaks up now.

• Workshop: Thursday, April 23 from 6-8 pm
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-t/> U Heights Auditorium, 5031 University Way NE
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-i/> Survey open now through May 4

Join Us at the Streetfair

The U District Streetfair is the best time of the year to talk with neighbors about making this neighborhood a better place to live. This May, along with the U District Community Council, our shared booth will feature some of the most exciting initiatives we have ever brought to the public:
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-o/> U District Regional Center Planning
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-b/> Pedestrianizing The Ave
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-n/> Expanding access to nature along Union Bay
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-p/> Safer streets for people walking and biking
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-x/> Summer outdoor concerts and movies
• <https://newsletters.udistrict.org/t/y-l-ahdyklk-dddrvdhs-z/> A World Cup™ celebration

We need enthusiastic volunteers who love this neighborhood and want to share that enthusiasm with the thousands of people who walk past our booth. Drop a ping-pong ball, start a conversation, and help us build the case for a more walkable, livable, and joyful U District.
