Seattle Streets Alliance Executive Director Helps Shape Transportation Priorities for New Administration
Seattle Streets Alliance Executive Director Gordon Padelford recently served on Mayor Katie Wilson’s Transportation & Environment Transition Committee, working alongside transportation, climate, and community leaders from across the city. The committee interviewed more than 100 experts and hosted community conversations, including a grassroots feedback session with 75 advocates and community members.
The committee’s recommendations outline an ambitious path forward for safer, more connected streets.
Highlights include setting clear 5-year targets for Vision Zero, climate, and vehicle-miles-traveled reduction goals; ensuring infrastructure upgrades reach historically underserved areas; launching major Vision Zero projects in Southeast Seattle on Rainier Ave S and MLK Jr Way S; and setting a goal to pedestrianize a street in every neighborhood.
The report also identifies several “early wins,” such as installing in-street bike and scooter corrals to improve crosswalk safety, creating temporary protected walkways on Aurora, completing key bike network gaps across the city, convening a transportation funding task force to support sidewalks and multimodal projects, and finalizing the pedestrianization of Pike Place Market.
As Gordon noted in his <https://streetsalliance.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1bab8fcdbb99a44490129dfa8&id=c001110a08&e=c5de82e11d> LinkedIn post, recommendations like these are just words on a page but they point toward real opportunities.
Seattle Streets Alliance is now working with partners and community advocates to help turn these ideas into policies and projects that make Seattle’s streets safer and more welcoming for everyone.

Olympia 2026 Session Recap
If you are hit by a car while crossing the street, who is at fault?
This year, Seattle Streets Alliance supported Washington state legislation that would presume drivers liable when they hit people walking or riding bicycles, unless the driver provides evidence otherwise. This is significantly easier for drivers to do than for the people hit outside of vehicles, since it is much more unlikely for drivers to lose consciousness or die in crashes with people walking or rolling.
The state legislative session in Olympia just ended, and the “presumed liability” bill <https://streetsalliance.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1bab8fcdbb99a44490129dfa8&id=e3cf647db7&e=c5de82e11d> HB 2095 sponsored by state representative Julia Reed successfully passed the House of Representatives! This is notably further than last session’s <https://streetsalliance.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1bab8fcdbb99a44490129dfa8&id=dd068434bc&e=c5de82e11d> HB 1518, which only made it to the House Committee on Civil Rights & Judiciary. Unfortunately, this year’s bill did not pass out of the Senate Committee on Law & Justice.
Awareness of and support for this issue is slowly growing, and Representative Reed remains hopeful and is already working on passing a presumed liability law in 2027.
Youth Transportation Summit Returns This April
Young people are helping shape the future of Seattle’s streets—and this is a great opportunity to be part of it.
The Seattle Department of Transportation’s Youth Transportation Summit is back on April 25 at Union Station. This free, one-day event brings together people ages 14–22 to learn about transportation safety, share their experiences, and connect with city leaders and advocates.
Participants will join interactive sessions, hear from experts, and offer input on how to make streets safer and more accessible in their communities.
If you or a young person in your life care about safer streets, this is a powerful way to get involved.

Judkins Park Station Opening March 28
A major new transit connection is about to open in Seattle. On Saturday, March 28, Sound Transit will celebrate the opening of Judkins Park and Mercer Island Stations. With these two new stations, the 2 Line will be able to cross Lake Washington with passengers and connect Seattle directly to Bellevue and Redmond via the 2 Line.
The Judkins Park Station will also improve connections between the Central District, Rainier Valley, and the broader regional light rail network, making it easier to travel by transit, bike, or foot in our region.
The celebration begins with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:00 a.m. at Sam Smith Park (Judkins Park Station East Entrance, 1451 23rd Ave S), with train service starting shortly after around 10:00 a.m. Community activities will continue throughout the day.
Local advocates from Seattle Streets Alliance will be there too!
Central Seattle Streets for All and Rainier Valley Safe Streets will be tabling at the event to connect with neighbors and talk about safe, accessible streets. We’ll be sharing information about recent campaigns while highlighting the importance of safe walking, biking, and rolling routes to Link stations.
If you’re planning to attend the opening, stop by our table and say hello!
Events like this are a reminder that transit investments work best when they’re paired with safe, welcoming streets that help people get to and from stations.

Get Involved: Boards, Committees, and Local Groups
The City of Seattle is currently recruiting for several important modal boards and committees:
* Bicycle Advisory Board
* Pedestrian Advisory Board
* Freight Advisory Board
* School Traffic Safety Committee
These boards help shape city policy and projects, everything from bike lanes to safe routes to school. If you’ve ever thought, “I wish the city did this differently,” this is a powerful way to get involved.
