Voyagers and Shared Paths are going on another virtual walking tour! Vista
Board Member and docent, Bill Miklos, will be guiding us through a tour of
the USS Hornet, an aircraft carrier museum now berthed in Alameda, CA. He
will take us aboard the ship and discuss her history, experiences in WWII,
and contributions to the Apollo moon landing. We will explore the ship’s
hangar and flight decks, learn crucial operations such as launching and
recovering aircraft, consider specialized equipment needed for this unique
floating airport, and discuss the highly trained people who ensure the
flight deck’s safety. Along the virtual walk Bill will share the USS
Hornet’s history from her creation to decommission in 1970. The USS Hornet
is a treasure of engineering, history, bravery and sacrifice you won’t want
to miss out on this fascinating tour! Tour will include sounds, vibrant
descriptions, visuals, and even some physical movement.

About Bill Miklos:

Bill has a BS and MS in Aerospace Mechanical Engineering. He served 13
years as an officer in the US Air Force in hardware development and
acquisition assignments involving flight dynamics, Headquarters program
management and satellite bus design. After serving in the Air Force, he was
employed by Lockheed Martin Space Systems for 23 years. He held system
engineering and management positions in satellite design and ground system
development for the Milstar satellite system and was Space Segment Director
of the follow-on to Milstar, the Advanced EHF Satellite. Before he retired
in 2011, he was the Director of Launch and Operations Readiness for the
launch of the first AEHF satellite and supported launch team rehearsals,
launch activities and early orbit operations.

He now enjoys being a docent at the Hiller Aviation Museum and the USS
Hornet Sea, Air and Space Museum where he also supports the Education
Department with a short course on the Space Race and the Apollo Program.
He is also very happy to be serving on the Board of Directors of the Vista
Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
