Hi Tiffany,

Thank you so much for your first-hand account. This is very useful. Have you reported your experience to the Contra Costa Election office? Also, I encourage you to fill out NFB's voter survey.

Subject: [NFBSF] Accessible boating experience Contra Costa county

I want to share my experience with remote accessible vote by mail in Contra Costa County. Thanks Jim for all the resources. It is correct that in Contra Costa you do need the access code that is printed on your Purple envelope That you will be turning your ballot inside. I don’t know exactly where it was but I think it’s at the top. I believe it’s a 12 digit code. This was not accessible to me even using readding abs like seeing AI as I couldn’t easily locate it or be confident this was the correct information so I did get cited assistance.
I knew I wanted to vote remotely and so I went on my county‘s website and there is an email address that you sent to and tell them you want an accessible ballot. they then sent me an automatic email with instructions with a website to go to to input my access code from my envelope. Once on the website I had to enter my access code along with my birthday and complete a captia which was very tricky as it only allowed me to download the audio file and I had to try several times to type in the letters correctly. Once I did this I found the ballot very straightforward on a PC using jaws. Every page had a different thing you were voting for. The first page was just for president, the second was for one measure etc. it clearly tells you how many choices to select and they are checkboxes to choose your options. Once I did this there was clearly a review ballot button where I could see all my choices and edit them if necessary. I then was easily able to save my ballot as a PDF on my computer and print it out. I then used to seeing AI to clarify it printed correctly. I was able to fold it and put it in the envelope and seal it correctly. However I was not able to sign it independently. They put a cut out circle next to the line where you are supposed to sign however the line itself is not raised so I did not find this cut out circle very useful. Are use a signature stamp which is the same thing I used when they requested my signature so I can ensure that my signatures match. However you also need to date the envelope next to the signature line and I did not feel confident in doing this independently. Writing the date is something that can be easily missed as I only found that instruction on one email rather than on the general info on the website. If you are not comfortable knowing exactly where to write the date or not someone who writes by hand you will need assistance with this. This seems particularly tricky during the pandemic. Inside your envelope you get a print ballot and you also get an eye voted sticker which of course you don’t need to return once you print out your own ballot that you marked on the computer. I then looked up online dropboxs for my county as that was my chosen method of returning my ballot.
I hope this is helpful,
Thanks,
Tiffany

I am wondering if younger blind people would find this service helpful as well? If so I would be glad to try to work with Instacart to make this senior service available to younger blind people. Any thoughts from younger blind people much appreciated.
