Subject: [NFBSF] Virtual tour of the USS Hornet
Hello all!
Ready for a second tour of the USS Hornet? Join Vista Voyagers and Shared Paths next month on *Tuesday, October 27 at 4:00PM*. Vista Board Member and docent, Bill Miklos, will be guiding us throughout the USS Hornet once again to explore areas not covered in the first virtual tour. Tour will include sounds, vibrant descriptions, and visuals. See his detailed description of what to expect below!
Please be sure to RSVP to Valerie by replying to this email before October 25th. Zoom information will be sent once you have RSVP’d.

I am Bill Miklos, a member of the Board of Directors of the Vista Center and a docent on the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier Museum in Alameda California. As such, I have been giving full-ship tours for seven years now but primarily I work on the flight deck with our guests. Last time we did a tour for Vista, we walked down the pier next to the ship, walked up the gangway to the quarterdeck in the hangar bay, walked down the hangar deck to the escalator to the flight deck and did a virtual flight deck tour and talked about catapulting aircraft off the flight deck and recovering aircraft using the arresting gear at the aft end of the flight deck. We mentioned the “Island” which is a big narrow structure on the left side of the flight deck from which all flight deck operations are controlled and where the Captain sails the ship. BUT we did not tour what is inside the Island.....until now.
This time we will virtually tour the inside of the island, three levels up from the flight deck and our first stop will be the navigation area where we will discuss how navigation was done and how the navigation techniques evolved over time. The next area near navigation is, rightfully so, the pilot house where crew members actually sailed the ship. We will discuss how this was done and point out the Captain’s “At Sea” cabin where he lived while the ship was at sea. We will then walk out onto the bridge, which is a narrow, covered area that is around the pilot house where the captain can command the ship, control “Underway Replenishment” operations and observe operations on the flight deck. We will then go down one ladder to level 5 where we will discuss interesting aspects of the recovery of Apollo 11 for which the Hornet was the Prime Recovery Ship, (PRS). That will complete our tour of this portion of the island of the USS Hornet.
We will discuss history, navigation technology, ship control, Apollo 11 recovery and some aspects of crew life on the ship. Welcome aboard the USS Hornet for another Vista-sponsored tour of what has been called a “gem” of a ship museum by the San Francisco Chronicle.
