Hello NFBC-SF Fam,

I am super jazzed about NFB organizing the protest. On the other hand, I think our organization is perpetuating the anti-blind and ableist attitudes and conduct we experience when using ride-share. There's a better way.

Demanding zero tolerance punishes the drivers, and not the companies. It is the responsibility of Uber and Lyft to meaningfully and effectively ensure that drivers understand their legal obligations, including transporting us, our long white canes, and our dog guides. Apparently, drivers can scroll and click their way on to the driver platform. The solution is to provide information, or onboarding that is linguistically and culturally appropriate, and disallow the simple scroll and clicking on to the driver platform. Our energy is better spent demanding zero tolerance of Uber and Lyft, not the drivers.

That's all.

From,

Lisa Irving

While we continue to hold regular meetings with both companies in good faith to improve their policies and practices, there is rarely a day that goes by when we do not learn of another ride denied to a blind person…We will take all of the courageous steps necessary to stop this second-class treatment.”
