Let's make sure she knows about the fabulous lifestyle here in Alexandria! *smile* Brian Miller President, Greater Alexandria Chapter -----Original Message----- From: NFBV-Announce [mailto:nfbv-announce-bounces at nfbnet.org] On Behalf Of Tracy Soforenko via NFBV-Announce Sent: Thursday, June 29, 2017 10:42 PM To: nfbv-announce at nfbnet.org Subject: [Nfbv-announce] NFB Student Leader & former National Center Intern seeks house/apartment share in Arlington/Alexandria/Falls church area From: Hindley Williams [mailto:hbwilliams16 at gmail.com] Hello All, My name is Hindley Williams. I am a recent college and Colorado Center for the Blind graduate who is looking for housing in the D.C. area, including the cities like Arlington, VA and Silver Spring, MD that are just outside of the Capitol. I will be starting a job in D.C. in July, and am looking to move in mid-late July/August. I would be open to sharing an apartment or house with room mates, and am also happy to rent a room from someone who would be willing. I do not have a service animal, do not have any allergies or issues with animals in the home, and would like to live somewhere near public transit (preferably the metro, but I can be flexible). Please feel free to contact me via email at hbwilliams16 at gmail.com, or you can call my cell phone at (443) 823-0867 if you have any questions or leads for me. Please feel free to distribute this message to anyone you may know who could possibly be willing to assist me. Thank you for your time and for any assistance you can provide. If you can help Alyssa out, that would be great. Thanks, Brian Miller President, Greater Alexandria Chapter From: Alyssa Henson [mailto:alyssahenson95 at gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2017 3:50 PM To: johnh50 at verizon.net Subject: Introducing Myself and Housing Questions Dear Mr. Halverson: My name is Alyssa Henson. I am a graduate of the Colorado Center for the Blind who has been living in Virginia for nearly a year. I am interested in relocating to Arlington, and understand that is where this NFB chapter is based. I am looking for information on relocating to Arlington on a fixed income, and am interested in finding a short-term roommate. I have contacted the Arlington Housing Authority, and was told I need to be a resident of the county in order to receive housing assistance. With that said, do you know of anyone else I should contact, or do you know if anyone in the chapter is looking for a short-term roommate, so I can establish residency? Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to discussing this further with you. I can be reached via email at alyssahenson95 at gmail.com, or by phone at (720) 955-1967. Thank you, and I look forward to corresponding with you soon. Kindest Regards: Alyssa Henson -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I look forward to hearing some of your stories at our next meeting to be held Thursday, July 27, at 7:00pm. Our guest at this meeting will be vice mayor Justin Williams. He has asked, and I think it is a good idea, to forward a few sample questions to him prior to our meeting so that he can best prepare to discuss with the chapter our concerns. Bonnie O'Day, who has arranged for this visit, offers a few suggestions below, but I invite the entire chapter to submit some questions they would like to ask, and I will compile and give them to Bonnie to forward to vice mayor Williams. This is a very unique opportunity for our chapter to introduce the NFB and the concerns of the blind community to one of Alexandria's political leaders, so I encourage as many of you as possible to send me questions, but more importantly, to attend our meeting. Let's show vice mayor Williams how strong this movement is! Here are some sample questions from Bonnie: 1. Vision Zero: What is it and how will it improve safety for pedestrians? 2. Transit: What is the funding status of Metro, Dash, and DOT paratransit? Are there any plans for expansion or changes in the future? 3. Internet: What is the status of bids for additional Internet providers in Alexandria? Will there be competition among providers anytime soon? 4. Waterfront: What is the plan to expand the Alexandria Waterfront? (This is less important than the other three items) Please send me your questions or comments by the end of the day on Monday, July 24. Of course we will allow for spontaneous questions during the meeting, but it would be good to have a few things for the vice mayor to consider prior to arrival. I will send a full meeting agenda on Monday, July 24, along with the usual reminders about times, places, and directions. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions prior to the meeting. I look forward to seeing everyone next Thursday! Sincerely, Brian M President, Greater Alexandria Chapter of the NFB of Virginia you at the meeting -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Directions to the meeting: Directions from Eisenhower metro to the Carlyle Place Apartments at 2251 Eisenhower Ave: The Yellow line is the only train that comes to Eisenhower Avenue Metro station. If you take the elevator or steps down, simply walk straight ahead to the fare gates and swipe your smart trip card to exit. Once through the fare gates walk forward about 20 feet and turn right to go out the big iron gate - you will pass a bus transfer machine on your right; just past that is the gate. Continue walking straight until you hit the cross walk. Cross the service road/bus lane and you will hit a sidewalk leading left. There are curb cuts on each side of the crosswalk so you know how to line up. Follow that sidewalk with the service road on your right; you are walking toward Eisenhower Ave, so you should hear lots of traffic in front of you. When you reach Eisenhower Avenue, just keep following the sidewalk around to the right as it merges into Eisenhower Ave. Keep walking one block with Eisenhower Avenue on your left, and grass on your right. When you get to the end of that block there is a crosswalk signal button; it will be ticking so you can find it. Push to button to engage the pedestrian crossing signal. Turn to face Eisenhower so you can cross to the other side when the signal starts ticking faster and louder. Cross Eisenhower to the opposite side, then turn right to cross Mill Race, a two lane road now in front of you that makes up the intersection you are navigating. Cross Mill Race, with Eisenhower now on your right, and 2251 is the big building right there on the next block. Keep walking forward with the building on your left and the street on your right. You will pass a few storefronts - the Uptown Market, Uptown Cleaner, Top Coat nail Salon, and a hair salon and then the main entrance for the Carlyle Place apartments is next. You may detect a metal heating grate on your left just before reaching the front door - this is a good cue that you are almost there. There is a small lobby just as you enter the building, and a concierge at the front desk who can help you if you have questions. To find the club house where the meeting is, simply go to the left of the front desk, and turn left down the hallway. Follow the hallway to the end and the elevators are on the right. Go to the fourth floor and turn left out of the elevators, then a quick left again and follow that hallway down to the club house. The hallway makes a few partial lefts and rights, but it is only 40 feet or so, and the club house is right there. We will try to have people watching out for one another, but feel free to call if you need help . My mobile is 703-785-9929. You may also consider taking an Uber or Lyft. If you do a shared ride, it is rarely more than $5 from anywhere within greater Alexandria. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday! They appear below and are attached as well. Thank you, Brian Miller President Greater Alexandria Chapter of the NFB of Virginia Minutes of the Board meeting for the Greater Alexandria Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind May 25, 2017 Start time: 7:30 p.m. In attendance: Brian Miller, Evelyn Valdez, Renee Valdez, Andre Tynes, Wanda Taylor, and Terri Nettles. The Meeting was held via teleconference call and called to order at 7:35 p.m. by President Brian Miller. Brian first reviewed the Chapter checklist. He announced we are almost near to completing the items on the list. Terri will contact the National office as well as Gary Wunder regarding the formation of the Greater Alexandria Chapter. Andre and Brian are currently working on opening a bank account for the chapter and also getting a tax ID number. Terri will be the back up person for posting to the listserv in the event Brian is not able. We talked about setting up a FaceBook page and Brian will ask Jeremy if he would do it. Brian then discussed setting up a three month cycle for meeting; The first month meeting physical meeting, the second a board meeting via teleconference also inviting members to join, and the third month an activity. It was decided We would meet the fourth Thursday of the month. Brian suggested the June activity would be a tour of the National Cathedral which Franklin will arrange. We talked about the Tall ship tour for Saturday May 27 and where to meet for the tour. For the July meeting, Brian said Vice-Mayor Justin Wilson could come, And that Bonnie O'day will be arranging this. He hopes to get the Mayor to come sometime in the Fall. Evelyn spoke on voting in the primary election on June 13. She said all machines will be accessible. The offices are for Governor and Lt. Governor. She encouraged all to get out there and vote. If there is any problems with voting she gave two resources to contact: Alexandria.gov/elections and phone: vote411. Brian also let us know you can do early voting if need be. Then the board discussed Way Finding Signs in Old Town. We were brainstorming ways to make them accessible and take to the city council. Since Jeremy was not present, Brian highlighted vision zero. Jeremy will be attending a meeting in July and will give further information to us later. Wanda mentioned the tactile astronomy presentation given at the Alexandria Talking Book Library. Terri will talk to Kym Robertson to see if her husband would be interested in giving his presentation at the State Convention in November. Renee brought up a question from a group she attended with the Virginia Department for the Blind and Vision Impaired. Could signs be put up in an area where a blind resident lives notifying cars there is a blind pedestrian? There was discussion on this and suggested that this would single out the blind person. Perhaps would be better to approach it as a overall pedestrian concern. The meeting was adjourned at 8:42 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Terri Nettles, Secretary -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
