I just wanted to let the chapter know that I've signed us up for a shared table in the exhibit hall during state convention next month. The table will need to have at least one person at the table from noon to 5pm on Friday, November 3. Set-up time for the tables is 11am to noon, and tear-down is at five o'clock. Obviously, no one person should have this responsibility exclusively. I recommend we sign up for hour shifts, and if at all possible, it would be great to have two people at the table, so as to better manage the hundreds, possible tens of thousands, who will want to talk to us about our brand new chapter. I'll let the chapter know who will be managing the schedule of shifts, but please be thinking of when you can volunteer. The convention agenda is now online at NFBV.org, so take a look, and think about when you can help out. It would also be great to have something to offer people - Evelyn suggested signature guides, which would be great. It would be especially great if they said something like, "National Federation of the Blind of Virginia/Greater Alexandria Chapter." If anyone knows where we could get signature guides produced and embossed, please let me know. Our next meeting will be October 26. An announcement will be coming out shortly about that. I am happy to let you know, however, that the Meridian at Eisenhower, the building where I live, is offering the rooftop clubhouse to us for free - 25th floor river views! What's not to love? I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday weekend! Sincerely, Brian R. Staying at the hotel also helps the affiliate when we negotiate for future conventions, so give yourself a staycation, give yourself an extra hour of sleep in the morning, and come stay at the Westin! Our special convention rates are only available if your reservation is made by October 12 at 5:00 PM. The 2017 Convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia will be held Friday, November 3 through Sunday, November 5, 2017 at the * Westin Tysons Corner * 7801 Leesburg Pike * Falls Church, Virginia 22043 * Phone: (703) 893-1340. * Westin at Tysons Corner To make hotel reservations, you may Call central reservations at (888) 627-8970 and use code 10070. We had a presentation this week at the Alexandria Commission for Persons with Disabilities and I thought it would be of great interest to our chapter. Alexandria is so far the only jurisdiction that has established this new service. It essentially allows individuals and families to set up profiles in the system to which only emergency personnel have access, but it allows first responders to know if the individual they are seeking to help has a disability, lives alone, is a senior, and a host of other details that will make them more prepared to assist in an effective manner. Jo'Ann Maldonado, manager of emergency communications, can come to one of our chapter meetings and explain in greater detail if this is something about which we would like to hear more. Meanwhile, check out the flyer, and consider signing up. Sincerely, Brian R. Miller, PH.D. Can you forward the email below to our chapter members? It explains the city?s Vision Zero initiative and gives a link to an accessible petition our chapter members can sign onto. The petition asks the city to give higher priority to implementation of its Vision Zero initiative, which would reduce traffic accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. Note that our own Jeremy is on the list of those who have been injured in past accidents. Jeremy and I are involved with the city?s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (abbreviated BPAC), and we would be happy to answer any questions about this at tonight?s chapter meeting. From: Buzzell, Jeremy [mailto:jeremy_buzzell at nps.gov] Sent: Monday, October 23, 2017 1:23 PM To: Miller, Brian; Barrett, Sean Subject: Fwd: Public Meeting - Thomas Jefferson Memorial Accessibility Project Formal notice . . . I wanted to make you aware of a public meeting we will be having on a project to improve the accessibility of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial here in DC. This project is being undertaken as part of the Targeted Accessibility Improvement Program, which encourages holistic principles of Universal Design during the visitor experiences and the memorial facilities. To address the experience/facility holistically, the project must improve both physical and programmatic accessibility from entry to exit for a broad range of disabilities. The purpose of this project is to make the experiences and facilities of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial accessible to visitors with mobility, sensory, and cognitive disabilities through the application of principles of Universal Design. The visitor experience at the memorial includes arrival at and use of the facilities in and around the memorial (parking spaces, sidewalks, restrooms, information desk, food kiosk, wayfinding and orientation) and utilization of accessible routes to the memorial. The project is needed because the memorial currently has only one accessible route to the chamber level, which requires visitors to use a ramp on the south side of the Memorial to a sidewalk leading to lower level entrances on the northwest or northeast sides. If coming from the Tidal Basin (north side), the visitors must travel all the way around the memorial to the south side ramp and then back toward the north along the sidewalk leading to the lower level entrance. Visitors then follow a ramp to the lower level, and take the elevator to a non-compliant ramp to reach the chamber level. The public meeting will analyze the potential environmental impacts of alternatives (including the no-action alternative) for accessibility improvements at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial. The project will propose new/or develop alternatives to improve the existing routes and/or walks to more efficiently get visitors of all abilities to the chamber level. Alternatives will include new exterior routes and/or walks from the tidal basin plaza (north of the memorial) and the former car parking location (south of the memorial). Design of a route from the memorial to the existing concessions kiosk near the bus drop-off is included.
