All three of the new systems we are testing have headsets so voters can listen to the ballot, and mark their choices independently. Brian Miller President Greater Alexandria Chapter of the NFB of Virginia From: Anna Leider [mailto:Anna.Leider at alexandriava.gov] Sent: Friday, September 01, 2017 5:20 PM To: BrianMiller Subject: RE: Testing of new voting equipment for Alexandria Hi Brian, The Electoral Board will be purchasing the VERITY system from Hart InterCivic. And, yes, we will arrange to have a demonstration machine here for viewing and practice prior to the November election. We should get more information about delivery schedules next week. Once we get further into the process we will add content about using VERITY to our website. But Charlottesville has been using this system for a while: http://www.charlottesville.org/home/showdocument?id=45542 In fact, if you search on Hart Verity Touch Writer, you will find quite a few instructional sites. The VERITY system is very similar to our current voting system (same manufacturer) so we hope it will be an easy adjustment. In getting feedback from voters who tested the three systems, including Evelyn Valdez, it seemed that VERITY gave them some trouble with the first step-entering the access code (which brings up the ballot), but the process improved after that. The next version of VERITY will eliminate the access code, so we hope voting on this system will be much more intuitive in future elections. Also, we will need to train our election officers so they are sure to let voters know they can adjust the audio, speed up the tempo, or mask the screen (so no one can see it) during the voting process. By November, the vendor will also be supplying us with instructions in braille to supplement the audio. Please let me know if you have any questions. I just wanted to send a quick reminder that we are now able to make hotel reservations for the NFB of Virginia state convention, November 3-5, at the fabulous Westin Hotel in Tyson's Corner, Virginia. Room rates are $84 per night plus tax for singles and doubles. This is an extraordinary rate for this part of the world! I know many will choose not to stay at the hotel and just commute to the hotel for convention sessions, but you may want to think about whether or not a few nights in a lovely hotel are a better notion, especially if you are like me and don't want to have to wake up super early and Uber my way all the way over to Tyson's Corner in the morning. If you share a room, it may not be much more money if you have to spend a lot to travel back and forth. Just something to think about. In any case, the Westin reservation number is 888-627-8970. Tell them you are attending the NFB of Virginia state convention in order to get the convention rate. I believe only rooms with two double beds are available under this rate. So bring a friend, or just toss your bag on the other bed and you are good to go! Thanks, Brian R. The message is below. This email is to notify you of a phone system outage at the Jernigan Institute in Baltimore. Presently, when you call the national office, you will hear a busy signal instead of the normal greeting. If you do hear the normal greeting and are able to get through, the call quality may be degraded. All incoming and outgoing calls are affected. The outage is due to a regional issue with the Jernigan Institute?s phone service provider. The provider knows about the issue and is currently working to resolve it as quickly as possible. We currently do not have an estimated time for the restoration of service, but will update you when service has been restored or if it appears the outage will be a lengthy one. I thank you in advance for your patience with this matter. I also wanted to let you know, in case you haven?t heard yet, that Josh Baker, the new director of DASH, came to the Alexandria Commission for Persons with Disabilities (ACPD) meeting last week and announced that beginning October 1, individuals who present either a Metro Access Smart trip card or DOT IDs will be allowed to ride the DASH buses for free. This is a new and for many a very welcome change. Let?s make sure that the rollout goes smoothly by reporting any concerns you may have to DASH, DOT, WMATA, the ACPD, and your friendly neighborhood NFB chapter as appropriate. Thanks all! Brian R.
