I wanted to be sure everyone had immediate access to this latest release, so I've attached it to this email, and provided a link to it below as well. You may also subscribe to the presidential release as a podcast, and it is available through the NFB newsline for the blind service. Here is the link to the release: https://nfb.org/presidential-releases The topics of the release include: *Pre-registration for the NFB national convention information *Delta policy on traveling with guide dogs updates; *Aira exclusive prices for NFB members for new and current subscribers - this includes 60 free minutes for home and work, NFB conventions, and work-related activities; and *The NFB code of conduct. Of these above topics, I want to draw particular attention to the code of conduct developed by our national leadership, and expected to be implemented by all our affiliates. Chapter presidents have been asked to be sure that we review this code of conduct at our meetings and make sure everyone understands it, and has the chance to ask any questions. We will listen to president Riccobono' s presentation of the code of conduct the next time the board meets, as well as at our next chapter meeting. Please take the time to listen to it in advance so that we can be best prepared to discuss it when we meet. Meanwhile, please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions regarding the code of conduct, or any other aspect of the presidential release. Although closed captioning has long been established universally, AD is not as common. What is it? Dr. Cathy Kudlick, Director of the Paul Longmore Institute at San Francisco State, described the advantages of this unique audio track in a film or television program: ?Until AD came along ? my visually-impaired comrades and I sat clueless during that key turning point in a film when a hand-written letter makes the audience gasp or the dog eating off the wedding banquet table had everyone around us in stitches.? AD, audio description, is a distinct audio track that provides such information fluidly within a television or film program. It can also be employed in the theater and at many types of exhibitions and performances. In a feedback screening of Becoming Helen Keller's first-hour rough cut at the Perkins School For The Blind last fall, AD was included. Michael Kantor, Executive Producer for the award-winning American Masters series attended the screening and said, "As public media, our mission is to create diverse, trusted media content that educates, informs, and entertains our audiences. Going forward, Audio Description will be part of our effort to make the content we produce accessible to as wide an audience as possible." Becoming Helen Keller will have its exclusive U.S. broadcast premiere on American Masters. We are proud to be the prompt for this important step to increase access to content for all. But this film is still a work-in-progress. Join us when we launch our Kickstarter campaign, later this spring. 3500 REAL PHOTO POSTCARDS, PLUS, Now @ Yale Medical Library ?I'm feeling separation anxiety," Dr. Robert Bogdan told us, when we asked him about the big move he undertook recently. "It has been a life's work. and now it is elsewhere. I am used to thinking and looking at them much of the time." DHM fans know that we regularly use elements from the ?Robert Bogdan Collection? in our work. Bob's disability history image collection has greatly enhanced the ability of all disability studies scholars to establish the full range of the representation of people with disabilities in 20th century photography. And, scholars of the future will greatly appreciateo this indefatigable collector's treasure-hunting efforts. Recently, all 3500 images in the collection were acquired by Yale University?s Medical Library Special Collections, which has already posted a preliminary inventory of the archives online. Bogdan is one of disability history?s foundational scholars. His work is especially attentive to the visual rhetoric of disability, including the material production and distribution context of these ephemeral artifacts?photo postcards, pamphlets, carte de visites. He has written about the images and pamphlets distributed by P. T. Barnum as part of the American Museum and later in circus sideshows and by disabled beggars selling a variety of services and objects. He coined the phrase "citizen portraits" to describe photo postcards with families and individual photo portraits. His books include Freak Show: Presenting Human Odditites for Amusement and Profit, Picturing Disability, and more. What many in the disability scholarship community may not know is that Bogdan also has a spectacular collection of panoramic photographs that includes images of mutual aid society members, institutions, union and other laboring groups, atheletic teams, musicians, school faculty and student groups, veterans, and more He also collects and writese about photographers and postcards associated with the Adirondacks. Bogdan is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Social Science and Education at Syracuse University. After teaching for 35 years at Syracuse he and his wife retired to rural Vermont. Read Yale's Announcement MENDICANT PAMPHLETS The image to the left is the cover of a 30 page pamphlet. Its colors are faded, and the printing quality is fair at best, but we found this recently at an ephemera show (where collectors go to buy and sell their finds). We go to these events as a form of research, but this post WWI era item was unusual. It includes nearly 25 WWI era cartoons, a dozen jokes and poems as well. Very few of either genre are top quality wit or humor. The back cover identifies the seller as an "unemployed disabled veteran". In addition to a few mendicant pamphlets in Bob Bogdan's collection at Yale, we know of three other mendicant "pamphlet" or "broadside" collections. You can find them at Harvard's Countway Library of Medicine (mostly 19th c.). There are more from a broader period in the "Americana" American History Collection at the Newberry Library in Chicago, and a few are at the Library of Congress. REVEREND CECIL A. President Greater Alexandria Chapter of the NFB of Virginia From: In A DASH News [mailto:allyson.teevan=alexandriava.gov at mail36.suw111.mcdlv.net] On Behalf Of In A DASH News Sent: Friday, March 16, 2018 8:30 AM To: brianrmiller88 at gmail.com Subject: DASH Community Meetings: 3/21 & 4/5 DASH Community Meetings March 21 and April 5, 2018 As part of its annual budget development process, DASH is gathering community input on several proposed fare and service changes. The proposed changes include a fare increase from $1.60 to $1.75, an increase in the cost of the monthly DASH Pass from $40 to $45, a new discounted Senior SmarTrip fare during off-peak periods, and a minor reduction in weekday morning King Street Trolley service. The proposed changes are part of a larger DASH budget proposal that seeks to improve the agency?s financial stability amidst declining ridership trends at both the regional and national levels. ?DASH takes great pride in its low fares and exceptional customer service,? said DASH Marketing & Communications Manager, Allyson Teevan. ?Our proposed FY 2019 budget is designed to increase revenues, avoid major service cuts, and maintain fares that are still well below all other bus agencies in the D.C region.? One of the highlights of the proposed fare changes is a new $1.00 senior fare for all Senior SmarTrip users traveling during off-peak weekday hours (before 6:00 AM, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and after 6:00 PM) and on weekends. The new discount is aimed at making public transit more affordable for Alexandria?s senior community members and encouraging increased ridership during off-peak periods when buses are less crowded. The proposed fare increase would raise the cost of a single, one-way trip from $1.60 to $1.75 to help offset the cost of the new senior program. The change represents the first fare DASH fare increase in nearly five years, and only the third fare increase since 1999. DASH is collecting feedback on the proposed changes outlined above. Community members may provide input online at www.dashbus.com, via e-mail, via telephone (703-746-DASH), or in person at one of several community meetings that are being held throughout the city, that will also stream Live on DASH?s Facebook @DASHBus: * Wednesday, March 21, 2018: 6:00 - 7:00 PM William Ramsay Elementary School, 5700 Sanger Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22311 * Thursday, April 5, 2018: 6:30 ? 7:30 PM Mt. Please find attached a copy of our chapter roster which includes contact information of members who have paid dues and are eligible to vote at April?s meeting.? ? It?s entirely possible we missed someone, so please let me and Terri Nettles, our chapter secretary, know so we can add your name. We?d hate for someone to be left out! ? Also, please let us know if your contact information is incorrect or has changed. ? Please note that April is our first birthday as a chapter, so we will have much to celebrate. It also means that next year?s dues of five dollars each is owed to the chapter if you want to keep current. ? I will send out a save the date notice very shortly for our April meeting. ? Also watch for an activity announcement from Evelyn Valdez for early April very soon. Thanks so much! ? Brian R. Miller, PH.D. Please see the below announcement about an opportunity for us to participate in an emergency shelter exercise in the city of Alexandria on May 7. This is wonderful. Yes, that would be great if you extended the invitation to the members of the Alexandria Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. We are looking to test our sheltering capabilities and anyone who wants to participate are more than welcome. All I ask is that they send me an email, so that I can get them in contact with the person to register them for the exercise. Thank you so much. May I extend this invitation to other groups? I also happen to be the president of the Alexandria chapter of the National Federation of the Blind, and I thought some of my chapter members may wish to participate in this event. I work with the Office of Emergency Management. The City is conducting a sheltering exercise on May 7, 2018, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, at one of the City's sheltering facilities. (Location will be determined by April 2). I would like to extend an invitation to members of your commission to see if any of them would like to participate in the exercise. Would you mind forwarding this email to members of the Commission On Persons With Disabilities to see if anyone would like to participate in the exercise? I would like to invite you or anyone else from the Commission on Persons with Disabilities that would be interested in participating in this exercise. Right now we are still in the planning phase, but once details are finalized, I would be more than happy to share that with you and the members of the Commission on Persons with Disabilities. Also, if you know of anyone that has a service animal, we would also like to welcome them to participate in our exercise. > > If you have any questions, let me know. > > Thank you, > > Teresa Scott Hoggard, MS, CEM > Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Regional Planner Alexandria > Fire Department Office of Emergency Management > 900 Second St. > Alexandria, VA 22314 > 703.746.5267 office > 571.414.7698 cell > teresa.scott at alexandriava.gov > AEM(r) and CEM(r) are registered trademarks of the International > Association of Emergency Managers > > >
