Next Saturday the rec center is closed for an election event. So come get your goalball on this week! > > Come to Great Falls for a Guided Hike > This Sunday, October 21, back by popular demand, we will be having our second annual guided hike at Great Falls National Park, with a picnic afterwards. Those who participated in this event last year had a great time walking through the woods getting vivid descriptions of the surrounding area, history and ecology from knowledgeable NPS rangers. You will also have a chance to feel, smell and otherwise experience local plant and even animal life, so come prepared for an adventure! And after we?re done with our hike, we?ll gather at the picnic shelters for some food and fun conversation. > > The event will run from 2 PM until sunset when the park closes, but you can leave earlier if you don?t want to stay for the picnic. To make sure we have a group that is not too large and unwieldy for the rangers to work with, we need to cap this event at 15 participants, so if you?re interested in attending, please RSVP right away to karla.gilbride at gmail.com. I?ll send additional details about the event to those who RSVP. When you RSVP, please let me know if you would like a sighted guide to accompany you on the hike, so we can make sure to have enough guides on hand for everyone who would like one. > > Big Blind Poker Night on October 23 > Also back by popular demand, it?s Big Blind Poker Night! We took a hiatus for a while after our old stand-by location of Parlay went out of business, but we?ve found a new host and are excited to hold our next poker game at Buffalo Billiards on Tuesday, October 23 starting at 6 PM. As always, we will have braille and large print cards and tactile poker chips to make the game fun and accessible for everyone. We request $20 from all who attend the event, whether or not you choose to play, and all proceeds benefit MWABA?s programs including our growing fleet of tandem bikes and plans for our next goalball tournament in early 2019. And of course there will be prizes for the three people who finish the night with the most chips! Let us know you?re coming, and let the pre-game trash talk begin, on the event Facebook page here: https://facebook.com/events/244617426205429?refid=52&__tn__=C-R > And please share the event with your friends and networks. > > That?s all for this edition of the newsletter. From brianrmiller88 at gmail.com Tue Oct 23 11:46:30 2018 From: brianrmiller88 at gmail.com (Brian Miller) Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2018 07:46:30 -0400 Subject: [NFBV-Alexandria] Alexandria chapter meeting/Silly Hat Day, Thursday, October 25 Message-ID: <030701d46ac6$0ac1aa00$2044fe00$@gmail.com> Good morning, This is a reminder that the Greater Alexandria Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia will next meet on Thursday, October 25, at 7:00pm, in the clubhouse on the 25th floor of the fabulous Meridian at Eisenhower Station, 2351 Eisenhower Ave, Alexandria, Virginia, 22314. The building is literally across the street from the Eisenhower metro station on the yellow line, and next to the spiffy new National Science Foundation headquarters. Cupcakes and other treats will be available prior to the meeting, so come a bit early and grab a snakc and say hello to your fellow chapter members and welcome new guests. And Halloween is just around the corner, so in honor of this, everyone is encouraged to wear your silliest hat. Full on costumes are not discouraged, but as people are coming from work or the gym or other adventures, a silly and slightly ridiculous hat is an easy way to show your Halloween spirit! Any guesses as to what your chapter president will wear? Come on out and find out! Those not wearing a silly hat may be required to wear one of the lovely lampshades from the clubhouse. Apart from all that, we also have a number of interesting things to discuss, including a recap of our strategic planning session in August. The chapter will have an opportunity to discuss and adopt our strategic plan. We will also discuss audible traffic signals in the community, some tech tips, and other super amazing secret incredible life-changing issues. Plus, silly hats! How's that for salesmanship? I would also request one or two people to come early to help set up as well as usher people up to the clubhouse, that would be very helpful. Please let me know if you can arrive a bit early and help out. Call or text me at 703-785-9929 if you have any questions. See you Thursday evening! To those who could attend, we appreciate your input and we?re so excited about the discussions and outputs. Thank you! I have attached two documents for all of the chapter to review. My ask is that you at least review document #1, as we will vote on this document at our meeting on October 25, asking you to approve our strategic plan. The documents attached are: 1. The Grater Alexandria Chapter Strategic Plan? We?ll ask you to vote on this after a short presentation on Thursday night; and, 2. The full set of outputs from our strategic planning retreat. This second document is a FYI and provides some background of discussions we had at the retreat. If you have any questions about the strategic plan, document 1, please bring those questions to the meeting or contact me directly at 614-519-3026 or jwg at sgendeavors.com . After we vote to approve our strategic plan, we?ll break into teams, based on our four priorities, to start digging into our next steps. Read at least document 1 and come prepared to start implementing our strategy. I hope you all had a great weekend! As election day creeps up, we recognize that transportation to the polls can be a huge barrier. This year, we have partnered with Lyft to provide promo codes worth $15 for those who need transportation to vote. I need your help, though, with identifying individuals who may need assistance with getting to the polls. If you know someone who could benefit from a Lyft promo code, please let me know!
