I strongly encourage all of us to complete this survey and send it in as Bob suggests. Thanks, Brian Miller President Alexandria, NFB From: Robert Hartt Sent: Wednesday, March 6, 2019 3:00 PM To: brianrmiller88 at gmail.com Subject: Reminder: Give Input on Alexandria Transit Vision Plan, Future Changes to Bus Network Brian, As you know, The electronic survey being used to gather citizen feedback about plans to change the entire bus route system in Alexandria is not accessible, and I have been working with city staff to provide an accessible option. Attached is an accessible PDF they have just created. It is like the one that will be used at public meetings the city is hosting. I suggest you forward this to our members and urge them to 1, save it to their computers, 2, fill it out, which can be done by using the tab key and then pressing the spacebar to check items, and 3, email it as an attachment to the city staff point of contact, Steve Sindiong. His email address is: steve.sindiong at alexandriava.gov If desired, a print copy of the completed survey can also be mailed to: Steve Sindiong, 301 King Street, Suite 4100, Alexandria, VA 22314. In order to demonstrate not only our interest in an improved bus system, but also the critical importance of making sure all communication about it is accessible to us as key users, I urge all our chapter members to complete this survey and send it in. Note that this very short three question survey is only asking for feedback on two general concepts that are described for different route systems. To get more detail on the streets where buses would most likely run under each concept, our members could attend one of the public workshops being held tonight and tomorrow night. The time and locations for these two workshops are shown in the email below. Alternatively, the city staff has indicated they would be happy to schedule a time to meet with our chapter, as well as other community groups, if you wish to consider that for an upcoming chapter meeting. In addition, there is a reasonable accommodation point of contact on the city's Transportation and Environmental Services web page, and a link to that page is included at the end of the email below. After putting so much energy into making sure we are not forgotten and the city provides an accessible survey, I hope that you and all chapter members will take a few minutes to complete the attached survey, including the comment section it provides. Attending one of the workshops tonight, tomorrow or possibly in the early Summer and/or contacting the reasonable accommodation person to let them know we should not be forgotten would also be very helpful. I would be happy to answer any questions from our members. The public is invited to provide feedback on the bus network concepts this winter through a variety of engagement activities. The purpose of the ATV Plan, which began in 2018, is to redraw the city's bus network to better serve current and future transit demand, and to better reflect community priorities for transit service. The ATV Plan involves three rounds of civic engagement to ensure that the concerns and ideas of the Alexandria community are heard, recognized and incorporated into the development of a future transit network. The first engagement round was conducted in fall 2018 to define community transit priorities. The second round is being held this winter to receive input on the transit network concepts. Based on the input, final recommendations will be made later this spring and will be brought back to the public through a third engagement round in early summer. How to Get Involved The following are civic engagement opportunities that will be used to gain feedback regarding the transit network concepts. * Online Metroquest Survey (English and Spanish) * 10-12 "pop-up" events at various community events and transit stations in February and March * Three public workshops focusing on the transit network concepts (content repeated at each workshop): * Tuesday, March 5, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Hammond Middle School Library 14646 Seminary Road * Wednesday, March 6, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Armstrong Recreation Center (Formerly Cora Kelly Rec Center) 25 West Reed Avenue * Thursday, March 7, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Nannie J. Washington National Airport for full platform reconstruction and major station improvements. To expedite construction and minimize customer inconvenience, the six stations-Braddock Road, King Street, Eisenhower Ave, Huntington, Van Dorn Street, and Franconia-Springfield-will be closed from Saturday, May 25 to Monday, September 2, 2019, to allow for around-the-clock work. Metro plans an extensive network of free express and local shuttle bus services to help customers get around the region during construction. The station closures are part of Metro's three-year Platform Improvement Project that will completely reconstruct the outdoor platforms at 20 Metrorail stations, making platforms safer and more accessible for customers with disabilities, while also addressing safety concerns and longstanding structural issues. The times and locations to pick up your card will be listed in the letter we send you. The committee is not able to provide funds before the convention, so work with your chapter and state affiliate to assist you by obtaining an agreement to advance funds if you win a scholarship and to pay your treasury back after you receive your debit or credit card. > > > > > > What if I have more questions? The convention will begin Monday, July 7 and end late after the banquet on Sunday evening, July 12. Your request should factor in the following: > > > > > > A) What are my total expected costs: What should I expect to pay for convention factoring in expected costs for travel, lodging, meals, and a banquet ticket and convention registration? I have no idea how much it costs to get from your home to the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. You need to do the research. In addition, the banquet is a highlight of the convention and you don?t want to miss it. Many people choose to share rooms and you will start seeing roommate requests posted to our announce list starting soon. > > > > > > B) What can I afford myself? No one will be going to convention for free. The Jernigan Scholarships and McDonald Fellowships do not provide all the funding for convention for first timers. Individuals requesting financial assistance should expect to make a significant contribution to your convention expenses. You should be factoring in this expense into your budget. > > > > > > C) What is my chapter contributing? Your chapter is a resource for financial assistance. Do not come to the Virginia Affiliate requesting financial assistance if you have not asked your local chapter. I will be following up with chapter presidents to understand how you are contributing at the chapter level to programming and fundraising. > > > > > > D) How much are you requesting from the affiliate? After considering other sources, how much are you requesting from the Virginia affiliate. Please note that we do not provide funding in advance. Mark Roane will provide funding at convention but you need to work locally to get your travel and room expenses addressed. You should definitely expect to attend the Virginia Caucus, probably Tuesday evening, July 8 at 10:00 PM to receive the financial assistance. It is not Mark?s job to hunt you down at convention and it is not Mark?s job to provide you funds as you walk into the hotel. However, Mark will gladly sell you some Virginia Peanuts. > > > > > > Speaking of selling, fundraising is the means through which we have the resources to provide financial assistance. When I talk to your chapter president, I am checking to determine if you are engaged in the chapter and affiliate fundraising. We will certainly be selling items at the Virginia table at convention and you will be expected to help with that activity if you receive financial assistance. You should also plan to participate in working the Independence Market and other responsibilities as we all work together to make the convention a success. You should be hustling throughout convention and afterward back in Virginia to sell our products to fund our movement. > > > > > > We are asking that requests are submitted no later than June 1, 2019.
