The sites are in Alexandria, VA, near the King Street Metro in Old Town.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">Participants must:<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">1. Be unable to see crosswalk lines, curbs & poles in the travel environment.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">2. Be comfortable using a long cane for the study, even if they normally use a dog guide.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">3. Travel independently & cross streets at least a few times each week.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">4. Have no limits to sensation in lower extremities or trouble with balance.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">-Participants will be provided with transportation to & from the study sites in Alexandria VA, and will be compensated with $50 for their time.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">-Participants will spend an hour and a half one day between May 11-16 working with the researchers between the hours of 9:30am to 6pm.<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">You may be a guide dog user. The testing session, which focuses on street crossing, must be completed using your cane. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the use of guidance surfaces at certain types of complex intersections (roundabouts, channelized turn lanes, large radius corners, skewed intersections and others) to determine if the installation of such surfaces improve alignment and crossing by participants who are blind.
