Message from the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

I couldn't wait to write to you this month. Many of you know
that my wife Melissa and I have been expecting the arrival of our
second child. May 15 was the glorious day. At 6:05 a.m. Oriana Kay
Riccobono was born! Weighing in at 7 pounds, 3.3 ounces, and measuring
20 inches, she is not only a princess but also the youngest member of
the NFB of Maryland.

Members and friends of the National Federation of the Blind know that
the NFB is more than an "organization" or a
"movement." The members of the Federation are a big family
connected all across the country. If a person calls you up and says,
"I got your name from a friend in the local chapter of the
Federation," you feel an instant bond and you are prepared to
help with whatever matter the caller is wondering about. Some of the
most compelling calls are from blind parents who are facing challenges
from misguided individuals who believe that there is no way a blind
person could be an effective parent. The other calls that always
strongly reinforce the importance of the Federation family are those
dealing with the education of blind children. Both of these are issues
we in the Federation family spend a lot of time and energy working to
improve.

I take the future of each and every blind child to be a personal
concern of mine in carrying out the work we do in the NFB Jernigan
Institute. It doesn't matter if we have met all of those kiddos
yet. We are trying to innovate the educational reforms that will help
each and every blind child receive the training and opportunities they
deserve. As you will see in this month's issue, we are helping
to build that future by building the next generation of outstanding
teachers to work with blind students. If you know of innovative
educational programs happening for blind children or outstanding
teachers working with blind children, please let us know about them.
We want to be sure that all of the great teachers out there are part
of the family so we can call on their expertise to help with the
innovative programming we are planning.

I do not know if either of my children will ever need training in
Braille or the other alternative techniques that blind people use to
be successful. Regardless, I sleep well at night knowing that the
network of the Federation family is there for them if that need ever
arises. We have many reasons to be hopeful for the future as we truly
are building a future full of opportunities.

I appreciate having the opportunity to share with you the news of the
Riccobono and Federation family this month. If you want to celebrate
the birth of Oriana and invest in the future of all of those blind
children across the country, I encourage you to support the Jernigan
Institute.

Featured NFB News

Graphic: Teacher of Tomorrow Program logo

The NFB has launched the Teacher of Tomorrow Program for students
preparing to be teachers of the blind. This program will provide
students with teacher mentors, blindness skills tutors, information
about scholarships, diverse teaching opportunities, professional
development activities at the NFB national convention, interactive
workshops at the NFB Jernigan Institute, and advocacy training in
Washington, D.C.
http://www.raceforindependence.org/site/R?i=JAidplA-dmcMEB1cGjxDzw..

In order to be effective educators, teachers of blind kids need
sustained and in-depth exposure to blind people from all walks of
life. Although current teacher training programs provide some
opportunities for their students, they are often limited by a number
of factors including location, funding, and access. The NFB has an
active nationwide network of countless resources that can be used to
provide future teachers with an enhanced learning experience, and we
are pleased to partner with teacher preparation programs to facilitate
these experiences for their students.

If you would like to be considered for this program, please complete
the brief online application by June 15, 2010. Please e-mail
Rosy Carranza or call (410) 659-9314, ext. 2283, with any questions.

Education

Last month twenty-five blind teens from twenty-four states traveled to
Baltimore, Maryland, for the NFB Leadership and Advocacy in
Washington, D.C. (LAW) Program. During this four-day program, students
learned about the legislative process and the grassroots advocacy work
of the NFB. The group studied two bills currently in Congress
that directly affect their lives: the Technology Bill of Rights (HR
4533) and the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act (HR 734, S 841).
http://www.raceforindependence.org/site/R?i=tYhP6EJYnc_AvrJJt4dvKQ..

Then the blind youth took their new knowledge of the two bills and of
how the government runs to Capitol Hill on April 20 to meet with their
representatives. Representative Sutton (D-OH) promptly agreed to
cosponsor HR 4533, remarking that she was moved by her meeting with
participants in the NFB LAW Program. Another participant from the
program-Snow White-Schwartzmann-continued to advocate for
the bills when she returned home to Arizona, making a point to meet
with her representative on her home turf, and was featured in the
newspaper in the process.

Twelve outstanding participants in the Braille Readers Are Leaders
Contest have won an expenses-paid trip to the national convention of
the NFB next month in Dallas, Texas. The twelve youth were selected
from hundreds of participants in the contest. The demographics of
these twelve winners (marked with *'s on the winners list) show
that great Braille readers come in all age groups and geographic
regions! Between the K-12
and adult
contests, we had winners from twenty-two states this year.
Christian Adams, a winner from Indiana, was featured in the "Top
Reader Headed for Texas" article that appeared on the front page
of his hometown paper. Congratulations to all of the hard-working 2010
contestants.

Advocacy

Blind pedestrians listen for the sound of vehicle engines in order to
safely travel. The noise is also helpful to sighted pedestrians
and bike riders. Unfortunately, a growing number of hybrid and
electric vehicles on the streets operate so silently that they are
nearly twice as likely to be involved in accidents with pedestrians as
vehicles with internal combustion engines, according to the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The National Federation of the Blind, the Alliance of Automobile
Manufacturers, the Association of International Automobile
Manufacturers, and other stakeholders reached agreement on a way to
address this threat. Now a bill containing language that will
require a minimum sound standard for hybrid and electric automobiles
is out of committee and will come before the full House as part of the
Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 2010. This victory brings us one step
closer to the Department of Transportation requiring vehicles to make
a sound that pedestrians can hear and use to negotiate traffic
safely. Fittingly, the advocacy of the organized blind was
recognized in an article in the

Washington Post.

Straight Talk About Vision Loss

The Straight Talk About Vision Loss Web-based video series covers
diverse topics of interest to blind people and their friends and
families, from gadgets to careers to alternative techniques to movie
reviews. All of the thirty episodes ever filmed are

Product and Access Technology Talk

The Access Technology team loves new things, and it has had plenty to
interest it lately. The new iPad 3G finally arrived so we could
experiment with it-check out the Access Technology blog for
first impressions on that. Surprisingly, perhaps, the team has also
become rather fond of another slightly less famous new piece of
equipment-the ViewPlus Premier 100 tactile graphics embosser.
There is, of course, a blog post about that, and more recently we have
been testing it on some rather exciting Hubble images with good
results.

With national convention coming up, and with the Apple session now
fully booked, the team would like to remind potential attendees that
the rest of the program will be open to as many folks as will fit in
the auditorium, and we have a particularly exciting lineup for the
technology day on July 3rd:

*

1:00 to 2:00 p.m.: eBay will co-present with the Access
Technology team to discuss the work they have done to improve
accessibility on the buyer side of eBay.com.

*

2:15 to 3:30 p.m.: Blackboard Learn is perhaps the most commonly
used online platform for education. Blackboard has made great
strides in enhancing accessibility in its latest release, and in
this session we will discuss the improvements as well as some of
the outstanding issues in the platform.

*

3:45 to 5:00 p.m.: The day's final topic will be eBooks.
The Access Technology team will examine the rapidly expanding
market of digital books and the devices used to access them.

In addition to their appearance at our technology day, Blackboard will
also speak about their learning management system to the student
division on July 4th from 8:00 to 8:30 p.m.

A little further in the future, the team will be hosting a webinar on
consumer electronics-stay tuned for more details. Finally, we
would like to remind all you prospective voters that you can visit the
International Braille and Technology Center to test voting equipment
ahead of the fall vote.

>From the tenBroek Library

Photo: Portrait of Dr. Isabelle Grant with Braillewriter

We're Cleaning the Attic!
We've reported before on the projects funded by a grant from the
National Historical Publications and Records Commission (a branch of
the U.S. National Archives). Attentive readers of Imagineering know
that research specialist Lou Ann Blake and project archivist Anna
Kresmer have finished basic processing of the Jacobus tenBroek papers,
and that the finding aid is accessible (in HTML or MS-Word) from the
tenBroek Library Web page. Our crackerjack team has now moved on
to the institutional archives of the Federation, and they're
already turning up some stuff we haven't seen for years,
including filmstrips (remember those, fellow boomers?) and movies that
never made it to our audiovisual storeroom.
http://www.raceforindependence.org/site/R?i=Z2K_kJ2uVK4-i7mgYuqxKg..

Meanwhile, Ms. Blake and Library Director Ed Morman are making good
use of the tenBroek papers in preparing a talk on Isabelle
Grant's 1967-68 trip to Africa. They are scheduled to talk about
Dr. Grant at the annual meeting of the Society for Disability Studies
in Philadelphia on June 3.

Anyone unfamiliar with Dr. Grant should learn more about her. She was
a major figure in the NFB for many years and served as a sort of
roaming ambassador when Dr. tenBroek was organizing the International
Federation of the Blind (predecessor to today's World Blind
Union). We'll have more to say about Dr. Grant's work in
the future, but for now we want to show off a wonderful audio segment
we've turned up: Dr. Grant's interview with a blind
teacher at the school for the blind in the newly-independent African
nation of Malawi.
http://www.raceforindependence.org/site/R?i=q7WbhH7pIxme6CFMkjJLNQ..

We look forward in a few months to turning our attention more fully
toward the very rich audiovisual archives of the Federation. We hope,
eventually, to digitize the entire collection of sound and video
recordings, and to vastly increase access to them. Who knows what
other treasures will come to our attention?

Independence Market

Photo: NFB convention store

As the annual convention of the National Federation of the Blind
approaches, the Independence Market staff is immersed in convention
planning. This spring, in preparation for convention, we have
been updating and reprinting some of the literature the NFB
Independence Market will send at your request.

Those contemplating attending our annual convention for the first time
may be particularly interested in reviewing the revised
First-Timer's Guide to the National Federation of the Blind
National Convention. This document helps the first-time
conventioneer know what to expect by giving an overview and describing
various elements of the national convention. This document is
available online as HTML and MP3 audio Hard copies in print,
Braille, and two-track cassette may also be ordered from the
Independence Market.

http://www.raceforindependence.org/site/R?i=LBLyUqFdUiasDw4uAHjVHQ..

Earlier this year we also reprinted The World Under My Fingers:
Personal Reflections on Braille. This little print paperback
contains personal stories from children and adults about the
importance of Braille literacy in their lives, a history and
description of the Braille code, and information about legal
requirements to provide Braille instruction to low-vision
students. Our members love using this publication in
public-outreach activities focusing on the need for Braille
literacy. The text of The World Under My Fingers is now also
available online.

The National Federation of the Blind 2009 Annual Report is now
available. Reading the newest annual report is an excellent way
to look back on all of the accomplishments of the National Federation
of the Blind in the past year. Get the 2009 Annual Report online
as an accessible PDF file or a BRF file (ready for Brailling).
Print and Braille copies are also available from the Independence
Market.

The Imagination Fund builds programs of the National Federation of the
Blind at the national, state, and local levels. In 2005, the NFB of
New Jersey and the NFB of New Jersey Northeast Chapter launched an
Internet radio program focusing upon blindness issues. Made possible
through a grant from the

episode of Thru Our Eyes is an excellent resource for facts about the
Imagination Fund and the Race for Independence, as well as tips about
how to be a good fundraiser. NFB chapters are encouraged to play this
episode of Thru Our Eyes at chapter meetings. This broadcast with
Parnell Diggs is one of almost two hundred podcasts available for

Citation

For the blind athletes who want to compete, inside the ring or
elsewhere; for the aspiring blind performers who want to demonstrate
their talent to entertain; for the blind kids who want to learn, to
grow, to mature; and for all other blind people who seek opportunity
that has so long been denied-we are the blind. We are the voice
that insists upon equality for us all, that calls upon all who know
the joy of freedom to join us in the struggle for full participation
and equality. We have faced deprivation in the past, and we know it
today all too often. But we have examined our hearts, and we know our
value. We are not broken; we are strong. We are not damaged; we are
resolved.
