LOCAL GROUPS PARTNER TO "PADDLE WITH THE BLIND"
After Friday's storms, it was questionable as to whether a plan to take a
group of blind people out on the river from the Fredericksburg City Docks on
Saturday, June 2, would come off. It didn't! The river was running very
fast, so the venue was moved to Old Cossey Pond off Kenmore Avenue next to
the dog park.
Greg Hall of the Spotsylvania Lions Club, Michael Kasey and Jessica Kostiw
Reed from the Fredericksburg Area Chapter of the National Federation of the
Blind (NFB), and Bill Micks of the Virginia Outdoor Center did the planning
and were joined by others from their respective organizations for the event.
There were also members of The Young Marines who helped with the paddling
and staff members of the Virginia Outdoor Center who were indispensible.
Ten blind citizens ranging in age from 5 years old through adulthood canoed
or kayaked with an experienced rower for well over an hour. Hannah, the
youngest, even jumped into the water at the end of her ride. "It was
awesome," said Hannah.
After the boating, there was a picnic for all attendees at Old Mill Park.
The organizers wish to thank the Subway at 525A Jeff Davis Hwy for providing
discounted sandwiches and the Chic-Fil-A on Plank Road for donating lemonade
and cookies.
"Everyone had such a wonderful time that we are already making plans for
next year's event at the beginning of June," said Michael Kasey, President
of the local NFB.
