Advertisement/Subject Recruitment Materials:

We are performing a study, which involves the design and development of new technology to provide tactile diagrams for those who are blind or vision impaired. This study will take approximately two hours to complete.

We are looking for individuals who are blind or visually impaired, and who are 18 years of age or older.

An information sheet describing the study in more detailed is attached at the bottom of this file.

INFORMATION SHEET

TITLE: Assessment of Perspective Cuing in Tactile Diagrams

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of this research study is to test the effectiveness of different methods for providing perspective in tactile diagrams.

You are being asked to participate in this study because you have been classified as blind or visually impaired, and may meet the study entry requirements.

DESCRIPTION OF THE STUDY AND YOUR INVOLVEMENT

If you decide to be in this research study, you will be asked to sign this consent form after you have had all your questions answered and understand what will happen to you.

In this study, you will be asked to attend one individual session. In the session, you will first be asked your degree of visual impairment, age of onset of blindness, experience with tactile diagrams and experience with Braille. Then, you will feel two dimensional raised lines diagrams on paper and physical three dimensional shapes. You will be asked to match the appropriate two dimensional diagram in a set of diagrams to the three dimensional shape. Your matches will be recorded on a computer document, but no names will be recorded on the document. You will feel three different sets of diagrams. After each set you will be asked about the System Usability of using the set by answering some questions given by the study staff and answering whether you strongly disagree, disagree, agree or strongly agree.

Your participation in this study will last up to two hours. Approximately 24 individuals will participate in this study.

Significant new findings developed during the course of the research, such as any risks and discomfort, which may relate to your willingness to continue participation will be provided to you.
