Day 6 of Black History Month 

 

Gilbert Scott Heron was born on April fools day 1949. He was in American
soul and jazz poet, musician and author, considered by many to be the first
rapper/MC. He was known primarily for his spoken word performances in the
1970s and 80s. He often collaborated with Brian Jackson fusing jazz, blues,
and soul as well as lyrical content that concerned social and political
issues that were occurring at that time. His delivery  was rap and
melismatic and informal term for this is a vocal run, though the term he
used to describe his style wasbluesologist. His definition for this term is,
a scientist who is concerned with the origin of the blues. His notable
albums include "pieces of a man "and "winter in America quote. These works
influenced and foreshadowed later afrocentric genres such as hip-hop and
Neosoul. One of his best known compositions received critical Acclaim, it's
called, "the Revolution will not be televised". Heron's aggressive street
poetry inspired a multitude of intelligent rappers wow his engaging song
writing skills Play some square in the R&B charts later in his career. He
was active up until his death and put out an album in 2010 called "I'm new
here". He died in May 2011. He received a Grammy lifetime achievement award
posthumously in 2012, and he was  included in the exhibits in the National
Museum of African-American history and culture which opened in 2016.
