Hey NFB Family and Friends,

What happened to summer? A few days ago I was wearing shorts and t-shirts;
today I'm wearing jeans and a sweatshirt! I hope everyone enjoyed summer!
The great thing about this time of year, other than pumpkin everything, is
our State Convention! If you haven't heard, registration is open and you can
register here nfbv.org/register. EatThe early registration dateline is
October 7th; register early to be in the drawing for a $100 door prize.
Can't wait to see everyone at convention!!

It is with a heavy heart to report the passing of Jim Green, a very long
time member of the Winchester Chapter. According to his wife, Mary, Jim
passed away peacefully at his home on September 15, 2024. Jim had served
as our recording secretary for 28 years. Please keep Mary and her family in
your thoughts and prayers at this time. There will be no services.

Thank you.

SPOTLIGHT ON.

Greetings once again,

The first frost of the season coated my mailbox earlier this month, and I
smelled wood smoke from a neighbors pot bellied stove on the wind. In the
coming weeks the countless hues of greens covering the mountains and valleys
of Virginia will transform into spectacular oranges, reds and a myriad of
other colors I see only in my mind but must remind my sighted friends to
take a moment and appreciate. Registration for state convention is also
open and I want to spend the first portion of the meeting coordinating
transportation to Portsmouth for our far flung chapter members and friends.

If time permits we will discuss President Riccobono's 2024 banquet speech,

"Dignity, Respect, and Determination" available at

pect-and-determination-momentum-blind>
https://nfb.org/resources/speeches-and-reports/banquet-speeches/dignity-resp
ect-and-determination-momentum-blind

Date: Tuesday September 17,

 Time: 8 PM

 Agenda:

*       Family matters

*       Announcements & administrivia

* Coordinating travel plans to state convention.

*       Speech discussion

I look forward to sharing an hour with you soon! Remember to visit the
chapter and affiliate Facebook groups. Also, take a walk outside and notice
the changing fragrances and soundscapes as Summer transitions to Fall.
Hear the leaves crunch beneath your shoes as you walk through your
neighborhood and the aroma of fresh mulch as gardens are prepared for winter
dormancy.

Patrick Johnson, Chapter President

Who killed Don Breathin? Don Breathin, owner of the popular theme park, The
Frightening Fair, has been found dead - on board his very own Ghost Train
ride! Foul play is suspected, and the staff of the Ghost Train ride have all
been called together as suspects. OMG! The question is, which one of these
strange creatures did the dastardly deed?

We need YOU to help us unravel this GHOSTLY murder mystery!

When?                  Thursday, September 26, 2024

                             7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Cost?                    $10 per person

How to play? All who have paid to play will receive the official
zoom link the morning of the event, Thursday, September 26th.

be great fun!

The NFB of Virginia is pleased to announce the launch of its James F. Nelson
merit scholarship program for the academic year 2024-2025. Up to three
scholarships of $2500.00 will be awarded based on academic achievement,
community engagement, and leadership potential. One of these three
scholarships will be directly pledged to a qualifying freshman or sophomore.

The NFB of Virginia believes that all blind and vision-impaired students who

associated with attending the convention for all eligible applicants,
including a room at the hotel shared with a fellow scholarship applicant,
most meals, the cost of registration, and a banquet ticket. Scholarship
applicants should work with their local chapters to explore transportation
options and should notify the scholarship committee if they encounter any
difficulties. Convention related expenses will be reimbursed or covered by
the affiliate at the convention. Please notify the committee if you do not
have access to a credit card or other means of covering pre-convention
costs. Applicants are expected to pre-register for the gathering to signal
their intentions to attend the state convention, and to assist the
scholarship committee in making hotel reservations.
