Welcome to another edition of member to member, we are continuing to get to
know members of our Greater Williamsburg Chapter; today Maggie Phillips is
in the spotlight!
Maggie is relatively new to our NFB Family; she's been with us since March
of 2024. Maggie joined our chapter and almost immediately jumped in and
experienced our Silver Bells Program. After thriving thru that weekend,
Maggie was hooked! So she than learned more, about blindness techniques,
through the VDBI Seniors week long program and has truly cemented her place
within the NFBV and the Greater Williamsburg Chapter!
Maggie loves to learn, especially about how to perform tasks as a low vision
person, and hopes and wishes her chapter would schedule classes on zoom and
how to use her smart phone. Maggie has been getting to know her chapter
members better "I'd love to plan a social outing or have a chapter meeting
where we can talk more and get to know each other better!" She is on our
BEAM Committee and has been helping to plan our yearly walkathon.
Maggie is a bit of a wanderer, she has lived in many places. She lived in
Richmond before settling back in Williamsburg. She has one sister, who lives
in the Groves, and one brother, who was killed in a car accident. She is
divorced and has one son who is married. She went to James Blair High
School in Williamsburg and has attended Key Business School and Thomas
Nelson Community College.
Maggie has had an interesting career life! She has run the gambit from being
a cashier to working in Colonial Williamsburg in the Silversmith area; she
worked with raw materials, silver and gold mostly, to create the jewelry
sold in the shops; to making ornaments for the White House Christmas Tree,
with a few different jobs in between. "I'm retired now, thank goodness! My
blood pressure has gone down and I'm so much more relaxed."
Maggie has had a few struggles in her blindness journey! "I was afraid to
cook and to try new things; I got over that pretty quickly" Maggie says,
triumphantly! "I cook now and explore and look for opportunities to learn
and get better at this low vision thing." Maggie loves to read and is
exploring ways to do crafts as a low vision person, "I want to learn how to
loom and crochet. I'm not afraid to learn anymore, bring it on!"
Maggie wants to travel, "I want to go to Yellowstone Park and Hawaii. My
dream vacation is to visit Paris, France, I'll get there" Maggie proclaims
exuberantly!
Thanks for sharing, Maggie, we look forward to many years with you in our
NFB Family. Tune in next week for more member to member.
Peace,
Jacki Bruce
