MARY REID DURBIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

$1,000 Professional Development in Assistive Technology SCHOLARSHIP AWARD

Presented by the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia

Honoring Legacy of Service, Technology & Independence

The Mary Reid Durbin Memorial Scholarship honors Mary Reid Durbin and her
lifelong commitment to empowering people who are blind or have low vision.

This scholarship supports individuals pursuing professional training,
certifications, or credentials in access technology to help teach people who
are blind or low vision how to use computers, smartphones, screen readers,
Braille technology, and other assistive technology.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

Applicants must:

*	Be legally blind or have a visual impairment that qualifies them for
services under IDEA or through a state vocational rehabilitation program.
*	Be a resident of Virginia.
*	Be pursuing or planning to complete a professional training program,
certification, license, or credential related to access technology,
accessibility, or assistive technology instruction.
*	If selected, Attend the entire NFB of Virginia State Convention in
Herndon, Virginia, October 22-25, 2026.

Examples of Relevant Certifications & Training

Examples include, but are not limited to:

*	NCATB - National Certification in Access Technology for the Blind
*	CATIS - Certified Assistive Technology Instructional Specialist
*	IAAP CPACC - Certified Professional in Accessibility Core
Competencies
*	IAAP Accessibility Training and Credentials
*	CLVT - Certified Low Vision Therapist
*	Other recognized access technology, assistive technology,
accessibility, or blindness-related professional certifications and training
programs

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. Training or Certification Information
Provide the name of the certification, license, or training program; the
organization providing it; and a brief description of what you will learn
and how it will prepare you to support people who are blind, low vision, or
have disabilities.

2. Personal Letter
Explain why you should receive the scholarship and how the award will
support your professional or personal goals in empowering people who are
blind or low vision.

3. Letter of Recommendation
Provide a recommendation from someone who can speak to your character,
accomplishments, service, and commitment to teaching or empowering people
who are blind or low vision.

$1,000 AWARD

The scholarship will be presented at the 2026 National Federation of the
Blind of Virginia State Convention. The selected finalist must attend the
convention to receive the award.
