Hello from Smithsonian Folklife!  
 
I am reaching out to share information about our current Smithsonian
Folklife programs happening over the next four weeks and available
accessibility services. We hope you will be able to visit us, and we would
be so grateful if you would share this information with others in your
community and throughout your networks.  

 

Smithsonian Folklife Programs Happening in June and July! 

>From June 16–July 12, the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural
Heritage will host  <https://festival.si.edu/map> free programs in the
Smithsonian Arts + Industries Building. 

 

*         <https://festival.si.edu/2026/for-the-common-good> For the Common
Good: Smithsonian Voices on Our Shared Future 250. A conversation featuring
a behind-the-scenes view of the Smithsonian. All sessions will also be
livestreamed  <https://festival.si.edu/live> on our website and on YouTube
and will remain available to watch.   

 

*        Storied Objects – a pop-up exhibition featuring objects and stories
from past Folklife Festivals. Large Print and Braille Guides featuring
exhibit text and object descriptions are available.  

 

*        The Folklife Marketplace – a retail pop-up with products
thoughtfully created by artists through the lens of cultural heritage—from
small-batch elderberry syrups made from farms in the Ozarks to birch bark
designs inspired by Eastern Woodlands culture, to custom fabric bags
honoring the local language of the Northern Marianas Islands. Visitors can
also attend demonstrations and hands-on workshops with local and visiting
artists and enjoy music and interviews at our Radio Corner.

eld3%3D36226> Audio-described/touch tours of the Storied Objects exhibition,
the stunning architecture of the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building,
featured artist demonstrations, and the Folklife Marketplace will be
available:   

*                  Friday, June 19 (3:00 – 4:30 PM)  - featuring the
site-specific installation by artist-in-residence Ubaldo A. Sánchez as he
creates an alfombra (carpet) out of carefully layered sawdust, florals, and
other materials.  

*                  Sunday, June 28 (2:00 – 3:30 PM) - featuring the work of
artists-in-residence Sierra Henries (birchbark pyrography) and Hawk Henries
(Eastern Woodlands flutes). 

*                  Saturday, July 11 (3:30 – 5:00 PM) - featuring
demonstrations of roasting and brewing of Bird Friendly Coffee with
Chesapeake Coffee Roasters. 

Pre-registration for audio described tours is encouraged but not required.  

The Festival is also a location for the  <https://aira.io/> Aira Access
verbal description service. Visitors can download the free Aira app on their
smartphone and speak to an Aira agent (data usage rates may apply if not
using a Smithsonian Wi-Fi network).  Sighted-guide services may be requested
at the Accessibility Information Table and are provided as available.
