Please join us every day this month as our Black Empowerment Committee teaches us about African Americans throughout history.<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Day 3 of Black History Month<o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>William Arthur Lewis, born in Castries, Saint Lucia in 1915, accomplished many "firsts" during this lifetime. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>He earned a government scholarship to attend the London School of Economics (LSE) at 18, becoming the first black individual to gain acceptance there. He later became the first black faculty member at LSE after being offered a teaching position in 1938. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>He was knighted by the British government for his achievements and for his contributions to the field of economics in 1963. That same year, he was appointed to the position of University Professor at Princeton University. He was the first black instructor to be given a full professorship. <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>Sir Lewis and Theodore Schultz received the Nobel prize in Economics in 1979, "for their pioneering research into economic development research with particular consideration of the problems of developing countries." <o:p></o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal><o:p> </o:p></p><p class=MsoNormal>To date, Sir William Arthur Lewis is the only black individual to receive the honor in the field of Economics.
