We are offering two scholarships and one memorial fund to blind persons in need. One $2,000 scholarship for a college student, One $2,000 scholarship for a high school student, and funds up to $2,000 for a legally blind person in need. I have summarized the scholarships below in greater detail: <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>The Amy Barnes College Scholarship ($2,000)</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt'><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Amy Barnes was remembered as the “Founding Mother," of the local Winchester National Federation of the Blind Chapter in the early 1960's. The Chapter started out as the Winchester Association of the Blind. It eventually became a Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. Amy was the longest serving Chapter President and was an active member well into the 21st century.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>This scholarship is for any legally blind or low vision student attending college whose legal residence is currently in the Shenandoah Valley area, or who graduated from a Shenandoah Valley area high school.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Blindness or low vision is defined by: Loss of vision that cannot be correct by eye glasses or contact lenses. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Funds can be used towards education, low vision equipment or technology, books, specialized training, or anything that promotes independence in order to be successful in meeting higher education goals. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>The Shirley Guess Scholarship ($2,000)</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt'><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Shirley Guess was a long serving President of the Local Winchester Chapter – National Federation of the Blind. She began back in the mid 1990's, and led the Chapter for many years. She was instrumental in keeping this group active and promoting the needs of the local blind community.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>This scholarship is for any legally blind or low vision student, kindergarten through 12th grade, attending school in Winchester City, Frederick County, Warren County or Clarke County. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Blindness or low vision is defined by: Loss of vision that cannot be correct by eye glasses or contact lenses. <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Funds can be used towards education, low vision equipment or technology, books, conferences, specialized training, or anything that promotes independence in order to be successful in meeting goals/needs.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>The Charlie Brown Memorial Fund ($2,000)</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt'><o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>Charlie Brown was a Disability Rights Advocate and Attorney who paved the way for many of us today. Charlie was a long-time member of the National Federation of the Blind (NFB). He served in various volunteer positions including: Virginia State Affiliate President for 26 years, member of the National Board of Directors, and National Treasurer. In 2006, he received the Federation’s Jacobus tenBroek award. It is considered the highest form of achievement within the NFB.<o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'> <o:p></o:p></span></p><p class=MsoNormal><span style='font-size:12.0pt'>The Charlie Brown Memorial Fund was created to help those who are legally blind in Winchester City, Frederick County, Warren County or Clarke County areas. The fund is available to help those who are legally blind or low vision who are in need.
