I’ve learned so much; its true, you have to watch out for the quiet ones. The Membership Committee is working with the Communications Committee and these Member to Member announcements are on our face book page every Monday; check us out there.

This week, you’ll learn more about Annie Asher! Read on and enjoy.

Annie Asher:

Annie comes to us from New London, CT where she lived until bootcamp. She attended bootcamp in Alabama and then spent several years living all around Texas.

From Texas to a stint in Maryland, where her husband worked in the Pentagon, to Germany and now she’s ours and living in Virginia Beach.

I mentioned bootcamp, yes, bootcamp! Annie was in the Women’s Core where she was a medic/nurse. One of her fondest and most memorable moments she says “Other than the births of my children, graduating from bootcamp was one of my proudest moments of my life! It was a struggle at times but I did it!” After her military career, she volunteered with the Red Cross until she was hired as a Federal Worker; she retired in December of 2014 and joined our Affiliate in January 2015; she is currently the President of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter. Annie has worn different hats within the Affiliate, she was Vice President of her chapter before becoming President, attended the Chapter Leadership Institute (CLI), she has attended both State and National Conventions, she has been a mentor, is a member of the Membership Committee (she volunteered for several duties during our last State Convention including but not limited to being a talking sign, setting up, breaking down and helping during the rookie roundup, taking tickets for banquet), she leads her chapters V.I.P. group (a monthly conference call training people on smart phones and computers and other resources for the blind). Annie’s Chapter is like the family you choose, they are very close knit and do many activities outside of their meetings. Annie says “I want our chapter to be more involved in our community! We have done health fairs and have had speakers at chapter meetings but we are looking for more opportunities to be involved.” Go on with your bad self, Annie; great forward thinking on your part!

Speaking of proud moments, Annie’s children would be the topic! Her daughter lives in Virginia Beach is her oldest and has given Annie four grandchildren and one great grandchild! Her son, who is a former Marine and lives in California, has given her a grandchild as well. What a family!

In her free time, can you believe she has free time?! Annie likes to do crafts and crochet. She is also a member of the Virginia Beach Blind Lions, she has also worked with Access Virginia Dramatically Able, a program for blind and low vision students interested in the performing arts, Annie has a kind and caring spirit, she truly enjoys volunteering and helping others!

If you read Annie’s bucket list you’d know she is a travel bug at heart! She wants to visit London, France, especially Paris, Hawaii, again, Canada, and Ireland. Send postcards Annie!

Well, now you can check one more member off of your getting to know each other list! Stay tuned for more and have a great day!

Peace,

Jacki Bruce

Corresponding Secretary NFBV

mailto:jackibruce6@gmail.com

tel:(757)291-1789

Membership Chair

mailto:membership@nfbv.org

tel:(757)354-4170

Find us on Facebook @NationalFederationoftheBlindofVirginia

Find us on Instragram @nfbofvirginia

Subscribe to our Youtube: NFB Virginia

www.nfbv.org

STRONGER TOGETHER!
