Eight tips for Making a Great First Impression
During the 2022 state convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia, during their seminar entitled "The Best You ", I had the pleasure of working with John Paré, Executive Director for Advocacy and Policy, National Federation of the Blind.
During the seminar, John and I assisted those new to the job market to acquire some skills that would help them get and keep that first job. John's extensive experience at interviewing and with some input from me, here are the eight tips to help you make the best of any job interview.
Make eye contact. Even if you can't see the other person, do your best to face the person who is talking or to whom you are speaking...
Smile. A smile is one of the best ways to put people at ease and to let them know you are approachable ...
Dress for the occasion. If you care about your appearance, people will assume you will show the same care about your job as an employee...
Be authentic. Authenticity is being yourself and not pretending to be something else. ...
Be a good communicator. Being able to express yourself effectively may make a difference between getting and not getting the job. ...
Use positive body language. An open posture also denotes approachability and honesty. ...
Be empathetic. Empathy is the ability to share the thoughts and feelings of others....
Do your research and come prepared. Employers appreciate a potential employee knowing about the business and prepared with insightful questions.
The Fairfax Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind meets the third Thursday of each month. For more information, contact John Bailey at john_bailey17 at hotmail.com<mailto:john_bailey17 at hotmail.com>.
