Dear Federation family,

The Historic Fredericksburg chapter of the Virginia affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind is happy to extend an invitation to you to join us may 9th, 2020 from 10 AM to 12 PM for an enlightening and engaging conversation about blind independence!

We will be joined by Terri Rupp, Who will share her unique look at Dr. Jernigan’s 1993 banquet speech entitled “The Nature of Independence”.

In 1993 Dr. Kenneth John Jernigan, at the time the national president of the National Federation of the Blind, presented a landmark banquet speech entitled “The Nature of Independence”. He addresses the fundamental concept of what independence actually is and explain that in the end it is not what you decide to do with your life, or how you decide to live your life, but that it is your own decision and not somebody else’s that defines your life as being independent.

Mrs. Rupp is the Nevada affiliate president and serves on the board of directors for the national Federation of the blind. She is a graduate of the Louisiana center for the blind and a blind mother of a blind child. She also is the author of the “blind mom in the Burbs” blog which can be found here:

You can find a readable copy of his speech here: https://www.nfb.org/sites/www.nfb.org/files/images/nfb/publications/convent/addres93.htm
You can find an audio version of his speech here: https://www.nfb.org/sites/www.nfb.org/files/images/nfb/audio/banqspeech/the_nature_of_independence.mp3

Whether you are a blind parent who has decided to share audiobooks with their children rather than twin vision books, or a daily 9 to 5 worker who has decided a guide dog will better serve your navigational and social comfort needs better than a long white cane; We look forward to hearing your own ideas and insights from Dr. Jernigan‘s words, and how you embody the spirit of independence.

Sincerely,

Brittany Ingram
