<p class="MsoNormal">The attached overview contains information about the national research study taking place in Old Town Alexandria between May 11<sup>th</sup> and May 16<sup>th</sup>.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>We are seeking people who are blind or have low vision to participate for a 90 minute exercise in street crossing under the guidance of the research team.</b> Nina and I will interview you over the phone to gather basic information and
answer any questions.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:#1F497D"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Participants in the study will be asked to find and align to 6 roadway crossing situations, 3 with tactile guidance surfaces installed, and 3 without. The sites are in Alexandria, VA, near the King Street Metro in Old Town.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Participants must:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">1. Be unable to see crosswalk lines, curbs & poles in the travel environment.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">2. Be comfortable using a long cane for the study, even if they normally use a dog guide.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">3. Travel independently & cross streets at least a few times each week.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">4. Have no limits to sensation in lower extremities or trouble with balance.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">-Participants will be provided with transportation to & from the study sites in Alexandria VA, and will be compensated with $50 for their time.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">-Participants will spend an hour and a half one day between May 11-16 working with the researchers between the hours of 9:30am to 6pm.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">You may be a guide dog user. The testing session, which focuses on street crossing, must be completed using your cane. We will have qualified people present to stay with your dog while you are engaged in the research exercise should you
travel there with your dog.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-top:6.0pt">This study is part of a research project for the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) titled
<b><i><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The</span></i></b><b><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">
<i>Effect of Guidance Surfaces on Travelers with Vision and Mobility Impairments</i>.
</span></b>This study is being conducted by Western Michigan University (WMU) and Accessible Design for the Blind. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the use of guidance surfaces at certain types of complex intersections (roundabouts, channelized turn
lanes, large radius corners, skewed intersections and others) to determine if the installation of such surfaces improve alignment and crossing by participants who are blind. The photo below shows the prototype ‘bar tile’ surface to be used in previous research.

to collect data on 18 participants during our data collection visit of approximately one week. There will be two ‘pilot’ participants in addition to the 18.
