<p class="MsoPlainText">NFBV Potomac Chapter Meeting Minutes, October 10, 2019:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">The meeting was called to order at 7:05 PM. Sandy Halverson presided over the meeting in John Halverson’s absence.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Nijat Worley, our newest member, introduced himself to the group.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Gretchen and Kitty visited to give information about voting and, in particular, the voting machine which is supposed to be accessible. There are concerns about its significant difference from the appearance of the ballots resulting from
using this machine being quite distinct from those generated by the standard voting booth.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Icebreaker: What is your favorite breakfast cereal?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Members who were interested interacted with the voting machine.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Valid ID is necessary for Election Day; however, registering to vote does not require an ID card.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">If you do not have a valid ID for registration, you can have one taken and developed in a few minutes.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">A question was raised with respect to whether the voting registration form is accessible. The entire process online does require Your DMV ID card number, unlike registering in person.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">It will take a significant amount of time to purchase redesigned equipment and the process for study of the design and approval of it is long. Changes are not likely until around 2025.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">We were assured that absentee votes were counted contrary to popular belief.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">We discussed that it is important to show up at the polling places to use the equipment to demonstrate the need for, and interest in, the machines and to justify the effort in good design and their acquisition.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">If you want to work at the polls, must be a registered voter in Virginia; there is an online application.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Some of the duties include:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Check-in clerks: Look at ID; find them on the iPad.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Ballot officer: Take permit from voter and give them ballot with privacy folder and go to the booth.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">A voter for the touchscreen device would be taken there.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Traffic cop: Keep the line moving; let voters know when booths are empty, and for marking ballots and bringing ballots to the scanner.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Someone helps with answering questions.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">When ballots are rejected, it is an audio process.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoPlainText">The Domino’s app is being fixed for accessibility, and such apps are deemed to be public accommodations.

<p class="MsoPlainText">The bus to the state convention is leaving at 2:00 PM. Cost is $40.00 each way.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">If you say that you are going and reserve a spot on the bus, you must pay.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">Membership coins will be distributed at state convention, and there will be a recognition ceremony on Saturday. There are $20 holders available for the coins.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoPlainText">The state convention will consist of many excellent program activities, including Hospitality on Friday night; an Empowerment luncheon; a Seniors Possibilities fair; the Chapter Leadership Institute; a seminar on taking care of your
finances, etc. Childcare will be available. Do not forget about registration, purchasing meal and banquet tickets.

<p class="MsoPlainText">There will be an auction and door prizes, and there will be several interesting fund-raisers, including an NFL-related one conducted by the Student Division.
