Mike and Listers,

So that the WCB doesn't take sole credit for something the NFB has been
working extremely hard on, I should point out, that our national office
is very much involved in this Oregon crisis, and so is the NFB of
Oregon. Art Stevenson, President of the NFB of Oregon and the Oregon
board have been in constant contact with those who have been in
rehabilitation who are prominent on the national NFB board etc. I know
that Allen Harris has been consulted, and Fred Schroeder, former
Commissioner of the Rehabilitation Services Administration has been in
direct contact with NFB of Oregon and helping with strategies and even
meetings with government officials.

I think there was a rally on the Oregon Capitol steps yesterday in which
we (NFB) participated as well.

And, despite what is said, we must stay vigilant about this. This is a
strange, budget cutting time, and you never know what happens with
politics.

Several times, the Oregon commission's very life has been more than
threatened, and each times, the NFB came to its rescue. We have packed
the hearing rooms with more than the room's capacity, causing a hearing
on Commission-killing legislation to be moved to a larger venue, and
ultimately the efforts of the NFB caused the legislation to be
abandoned.

So, we must keep on keeping on with this one.

Today we received some encouraging news from Oregon. Last Friday
their
Governor recommended that the Oregon Commission for the Blind be
abolished
and that blind services be melded in to the general agency. Blind
Oregonians and their friends flooded the Legislature with their
disagreement
for this recommendation. Yesterday people were informed that the
Legislature did not agree with this recommendation and that the
Commission
for the blind would remain in tact. Again this shows the importance of
being able to mobilize a grass roots effort on a critical issue.
