November 2009
Dear Friend of Feet First,
One of the rewarding parts of working at Feet First is the opportunity to work with amazing partners. From schools, community and neighborhood associations, government agencies, tribal nations, nonprofits and businesses, our work is more meaningful and effective when we work together.
In October, Feet First partnered with Safe Kids Seattle a program of Harborview Medical Hospital on a month long project at Concord Elementary School. The pedestrian safety activities took place throughout the month of October starting with International Walk to School Day and ending on Halloween. A group of families and students also met at nearby Marra Farm to walk together as part of a "walking school bus" for both events. The project impacted over 300 students, parents and teachers and contributed to increased pedestrian safety.
Our partnership with Safe Kids, provided funding for film equipment for the school journalism class. The new equipment will allow the students to film a number of videos and Public Service Announcements focusing on walking and biking to school. The educational awareness videos will be shown to students throughout the year.
We continue to build our Green Feet program at John Muir Elementary School.
We organized four walk to school day events. Sound Transit was a key partner at all of the events. One of the walking school buses left with Zapgridlock, Sound Transit's mascot and joined a walk from the Mt. Baker Link Light Rail Station.
Earlier this month, a critical report was released by Transportation For America and the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership, highlighting the continued national tragedy of pedestrian deaths and injuries in the U.S., and points to policies and projects that states and municipalities can implement to make it safer and more convenient to walk. In Washington State alone, there were 126 reported deaths from 2007-2008. This number is not acceptable. Now more than ever, we welcome you as a partner in our work-become

CD Street Stories: Showcase Event
Saturday, December 5, 2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m
1411 21st Ave, (Central District) Seattle
Join us as we host our annual neighborhood showcase event. This year we highlight the Central District through our CD Street Stories.
Feet First worked with youth from the Central District area to combine the art of story telling with a web based tool called Yodio. We invited youth from the neighborhood to take pictures of the pedestrian and cycling environment in the central district.
Come together to learn, share and explore how students view where they live, attend school and spend time with friends. Raw and uncut, these are their stories. You'll be surprised by what you see and learn.
The three top multimedia videos will receive a Canon ELPH digital camera!
Come prepared to take a short walk around the neighborhood. before we view the Yodios and meet the young film makers. The suggested donation is $25.

New Blumenauer Bill Would Expand Safe Routes to School to High Schools
Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) has just introduced H.R. 4021, the Safe Routes to High Schools Act, to make high schools eligible for federal Safe Routes to School funding. The current federal Safe Routes to School program created in 2005 through SAFETEA-LU is making it safer for more children to walk and bicycle to school all across the country. The current program is limited to elementary and middle schools (grades K-8).
Rep. Blumenauer was joined in introducing H.R. 4021 by a bipartisan group of nine other members of the House: Reps. Bono Mack (R-CA), Capps (D-CA), Cassidy (R-LA), Connolly (D-VA), Filner (D-CA), Holt (D-NJ), Schwartz (D-PA), Welch (D-VT), and Wu (D-OR).
What you can do:
We encourage Safe Routes to School supporters to e-mail your House members with the following message:
I support the federal Safe Routes to School program because it is making it safer for more kids to walk and bicycle to and from school-improving health and safety.
(Insert a sentence or two about your local Safe Routes to School efforts.
If you have a high school that needs Safe Routes to School funding, please add that too.)
I hope you will support the Safe Routes to School program in two ways:
. Let Chairman Oberstar and Ranking Member Mica know that you support the
provisions in the Surface Transportation Authorization Act that will
strengthen Safe Routes to School;
. And, please consider cosponsoring Rep. Blumenauer's H.R. 4021 to allow
high schools to apply for Safe Routes to School funding.
Thank you for your consideration, and I hope to hear back from you on this matter.

Six: Thou shalt not encroach into crosswalks with your vehicle.
Seven: Thou shalt provide good wayfinding for pedestrians.
Eight: Thou shalt provide frequent, fast, and reliable transit service in urban areas to extend the range of pedestrians.
Nine: Thou shalt consolidate driveways and manage access on major arterials to improve traffic safety.
