Subject: Invitation to White Cane Safety Day
Join the Seattle Lighthouse in celebrating White Cane Safety Day on
Thursday, Oct. 15. An annual event, White Cane Safety Day honors the
independence and freedom afforded to blind and Deaf-Blind individuals by use
of the white cane. We're thrilled to have this year's event at the Mt.
Baker Light Rail Station at 2415 S. McClellan St. (located on the west side
of the three-way intersection of Rainier Ave. S, 23rd Ave. S, and S
McClellan St.) and we will spotlight light rail's accessibility features.
We'll also feature information tables with literature from the Lighthouse,
Sound Transit, and other organizations, as well as a display of examples of
equipment used for safe, independent travel and way-finding. Refreshments
will be provided. Sponsored by Sound Transit.
As part of the event, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels will offer an official
proclamation commemorating the day, and Sound Transit CEO Joni Earl will
deliver the keynote address. Other representatives from local blindness
agencies, state, and local governments will also join Lighthouse employees
and donors at the event.
White Cane Day was first established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964,
honoring the commitment of our society to accessibility and opportunities
for blind individuals and all people with disabilities. The White Cane is a
symbol of independence, safety, and dignity for blind and Deaf-Blind
people.
For more information on the event, please visit our website at
www.seattlelighthouse.org or contact Kathryn Wiegel 206-436-2116 or
