Agency profile: The mission of the Washington State School for the
Blind is to provide specialized quality educational services to visually
impaired/blind youth ages birth-21 within the state of Washington. Our
purpose is to serve as a statewide demonstration and resource center and
provide direct/indirect services to students both on campus and in the
children's local communities. Each employee plays a critical role for
the school and our students. We value our employees and continuously
encourage them to enhance the services that we provide to our students
and the community.
Position profile: The substitute positions require certified teachers
who can be available in the event of a teacher absence. Having your
name placed on the substitute list gives no condition for guaranteed
hours, nor any guarantee of employment. These positions report directly
to the Director of On-Campus Programs, providing educational instruction
to blind and visually impaired children.
The successful candidate will work in conjunction with work with other
WSSB staff to provide educational services to students on campus. These
may include but aren't limited to:
* Academics
* Assistive Technology
* Braille
* Use of low vision devices
* Self-help skills
* Daily Living Skills
Required Qualifications:
* Has graduated from a recognized university program and has a
current Washington State Teaching Certification or can obtain a
Washington State Teaching Certificate
* Must pass Federal criminal background check
Desirable Qualifications:
* Experience working with the blind, visually impaired, and/or
children with special needs
* Classroom teaching experience
Note: This position is covered by a union shop provision. Therefore, as
a condition of employment, candidates who are appointed are required to
become members of the WPEA, or arrange to pay to that union a fee
equivalent to its regular monthly dues. The union shop provision shall
be effective on the first day of the month following the employee's
initial 30 days in this classification.
