Federal Legislation
On March 15, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood
announced a policy statement substantially raising the priority of walking
and bicycling across the country. The statement notes:
Every transportation agency, including DOT, has the responsibility to
improve conditions and opportunities for walking and bicycling and to
integrate walking and bicycling into their transportation systems. Because
of the numerous individual and community benefits that walking and bicycling
provide - including health, safety, environmental, transportation, and
quality of life - transportation agencies are encouraged to go beyond
minimum standards to provide safe and convenient facilities for these modes.

safe routes to school update
Walking School Bus at Concord International Elementary School
Feet First has partnered with Sea Mar Community Health Center's Cesar Chavez
Village Housing. Feet First is coordinating a Walking School bus from the
village to Concord Elementary School across the pedestrian bridge at 8th and
Henderson. The Walking School Bus will be led by Feet First community
organizer Veronica Conti every Wednesday throughout April and May.?
As part of our work on the Safe Routes to School program, we are assisting
with removing barriers to walking and have applied for funding to replace
the rusty fencing and facilitate a community design and painting of the
walkway portion of the bridge.?
If you are interested in learning more about the project, contact Veronica
Conti via e-mail at veronica at feetfirst.info

for up to 35 mini-grants of $1,000 each to support the goal of Safe Routes
to School (SRTS) programs, which is enabling and encouraging children to
walk and bicycle safely to school. SRTS programs are implemented nationwide
by parents, schools, community leaders, and local, state, and tribal
governments.

Walking Works: Julie's Story
One thing all parents strive for with their children is quality time. The
older a child gets, the harder it becomes for the parent to fit into that
child's busy schedule. This is even truer once that child reaches adulthood.
Julie is an older working professional who has a passion for walking. Not
just any walking, but marathon walking. With her own daughter grown and
living several states away, Julie hardly has the 'face-time' with her that
she'd like. After years of touting her own enjoyment of marathoning, Julie
convinced her daughter to train to walk with her. Her daughter agreed. Last
fall, Julie joined her daughter for their first mother-daughter marathon
walking experience and had a blast. Julie now hopes this will become at
least an annual tradition, as they can switch between marathoning in the
Seattle area or near to where her daughter lives.
More importantly, Julie is a happy mom who's managed to reclaim some of that
quality time lost when her daughter became an adult.
