Opportunity for Service
Washington State Civil Legal Aid Oversight Committee
Non-Attorney, Client-Eligible Position
(RCW 2.53.010)

The Access to Justice Board seeks letters of interest from individuals interested in being considered for appointment by the Washington State Supreme Court to the Civil Legal Aid Oversight Committee established by RCW 2.53.010. The bipartisan Civil Legal Aid Oversight Committee is responsible for overseeing the activities of the Office of Civil Legal Aid (OCLA), reviewing the performance of the OCLA Director and making recommendations to the Legislature, the Supreme Court and the Access to Justice Board on matters relating to the delivery of state-funded civil legal aid services.

The Civil Legal Aid Oversight Committee consists of 11 members, four of whom are appointed by the Legislature, two by the Board for Judicial Administration, one by the Governor, one by the Washington State Bar Association and three by the Washington State Supreme Court, upon recommendation of the Access to Justice Board. One of the Supreme Court positions is the subject of this Notice.

This position is for a three year term commencing July 1, 2010 and running through June 30, 2013. The individual appointed to this position may seek reappointment for a second three-year term. No compensation is provided for service on the Civil Legal Aid Oversight Committee, but members are reimbursed for travel and other related expenses in accordance with general state policies.

Consistent with the requirements of RCW 2.53.010(1)(a), the individual appointed to this position must, at the time of appointment, be low-income and otherwise eligible for free civil legal aid services provided by a state-funded legal aid provider. Applicants should have either past experience as a legal aid client or current and/or prior involvement with community based organizations working to promote the broader justice interests of low-income persons and communities.

The Access to Justice Board and the Civil Legal Aid Oversight Committee are strongly committed to inclusion, diversity and cross-difference competence. Through this Notice, the ATJ Board seeks non-attorney low-income applicants who:

* have demonstrated interest and commitment to ensuring equal justice in our state's civil legal system,
* are committed to promoting bipartisan support for state-funded civil legal aid services, and effective non-partisan oversight of the state-funded civil legal aid system,
* offer relevant leadership experience and/or potential,
* have relevant client community-based relationships, and
* will help enhance the ethnic, cultural, geographic, political and other diversity of the Civil Legal Aid Oversight Committee.
