Downtown tunnel closure this weekend
A quick reminder that if you're planning a trip to downtown Seattle this
weekend, the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel will be closed on Saturday and
Sunday for some engineering work.
During the closure, light rail passengers can ride free buses running
between Westlake Station and SODO Station. All Metro tunnel bus routes will
use surface streets this weekend.
Edmonds Sounder station work to begin
Construction on the permanent Edmonds Sounder station is about to begin. The
Sound Transit Capital Committee on Thursday approved a contract for the
construction, which is expected to begin in July and take about 10 months.
The contract is with Pellco Construction, Inc., for up to $3,423,200, which
includes a 10 percent contingency.
When it's completed, Edmonds Station will have a new east platform with
larger passenger loading area and weather-protected shelter. The parking
area will be updated. Improved lighting will cover the platforms and parking
and secure bike storage will be available. The project also includes public
art and a transit center at the north end of the station to accommodate
Community Transit bus service.
During construction, interim parking will be offered at the same temporary
lot that is currently available.
Senior City grand opening
This afternoon was the grand opening ceremony for the Korean Women's
Association Senior City Apartments, which are located at the Federal Way
Transit Center.
Senior City is home to nearly 100 seniors in 61 rental low-income apartments
along with space for social services and KWA offices.
Sound Transit Boardmember Peter von Reichbauer spoke at the event.
Senior City is an extremely valuable milestone for Sound Transit, because
it's the agency's first big transit-oriented development project. KWA
obtained the site from Sound Transit in 2007 through a competitive process.
The $18 million project includes U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development, King County Housing Program and City of Federal Way Community
Development Block Grant funding.
Transit oriented development creates communities and services centered
around transit stations. It allows people living in communities, like the
Senior City Apartments, to have a high quality life without relying on a car
to get around.
Important Link meetings next week
Just a quick note that a couple of important Link light rail community
meetings are scheduled for next week. On Tuesday, an East Link Community
Workshop will give neighbors an opportunity to learn more about and comment
on the 112th Avenue light rail options in Bellevue. The meeting is from 6:30
to 8:30 p.m. at Bellevue City Hall, 450 110th Ave. NE.
And then on Wednesday, we've scheduled a community meeting to kick off final
design of the North Link light rail project. As you probably know, North
Link is a 4.3-mile light rail extension with stations at Brooklyn
(University District), Roosevelt and Northgate.
The North Link meeting is from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with a presentation
beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting is at Roosevelt High School Commons, 1410
NE 66th St.
Both meetings will be a great opportunity to learn more about those
projects.
Extending Tacoma Link
On Tuesday I attended a Tacoma City Council study session, along with Pierce
Transit CEO Lynne Griffith and Tacoma City Manager Eric Anderson, to go over
the efforts underway now to eventually extend Tacoma Link light rail. And
then on Thursday, I gave the Sound Transit Board's Capital Committee a
report on those ongoing efforts.
The voter-approved Sound Transit 2 program includes $80 million for the
extension of Tacoma Link. Over the last several months we've been working in
close partnership with Pierce Transit and the City of Tacoma to define a
preliminary alternatives analysis process to begin this ST2 project.
Together, we're in the beginning stages of organizing a stakeholder group of
about 20 people, including representatives from downtown, the Port of
Tacoma, Pierce County, neighborhood councils and environmental groups, that
will help advise us on potential routes and other important issues. The
Sound Transit Board will eventually make the final route decision.
The next steps include finalizing the stakeholder group and selecting a
consultant to begin looking at potential costs and alternatives.
The current 1.6-mile Tacoma Link line makes five station stops and carries
about a million passengers a year.
Sound Transit's employees log over 10,000 bike miles
May, which was national Bike to Work month, was very important to Sound
Transit. During the month 84 Sound Transit employees, divided into nine
teams, together logged 877 round trips for a total of 10,796 miles on their
bicycles in the annual Group Health Commute Challenge through the Cascade
Bicycle Club.
Fourteen Sound Transit employees rode their bikes to work every day in May,
and that was in a month with 20 days of rain.
So, how did we compare to other agencies and companies in the region?
Out of 723 organizations, Sound Transit came in a very impressive ninth
place in total trips and 10th in total miles for the month.
Besides its employees, Sound Transit encourages bicycling and provides
bicycle access at its facilities and on its vehicles. Sounder commuter rail
stations, Link light rail stations and ST Express transit centers have racks
and/or lockers for bicycles.
The Sound Transit Board's Capital Committee on Thursday:
* Approved a contract with Hoffman Construction Company to provide
pre-construction phase services for the University of Washington Station in
the amount of $347,000, with a 10% contingency of $34,700, for a total
authorized contract amount not to exceed $381,700.
