Subject: [wtbbl] WTBBL Wins Network Library Of the Year Award!
OLYMPIA.The Washington Talking Book & Braille Library, which has long played
a preeminent role in providing services to Washingtonians who are visually
or physically disabled, has received the 2009 national Network Library of
the Year award from the National Library Service for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped Network, part of the Library of Congress.
The award was presented Friday during a luncheon at the Library of Congress
in Washington, D.C. WTBBL received $1,000 and a plaque for the honor.
The service is part of the Washington State Library within the Office of
Secretary of State.
WTBBL program manager Danielle Miller and Washington State Librarian Jan
Walsh were invited to the award ceremony, along with Sue Ammeter, the chair
of WTBBL's Patron Advisory Council.
Miller said the award comes at a time of profound changes for WTBBL, which
joined the Washington State Library in 2008 after belonging to the Seattle
Public Library for many years.
"We are thrilled about the award," Miller said. "It feels like we have been
through so much in the last two years - the major transition from the
Seattle Public Library to the State Library, the transition to digital
talking books, and difficult budget times.
"Despite all the changes and all the ups and downs, we have worked so hard
to keep our service to our patrons the best it can be. Receiving this award
is like a recognition of all we've done to keep things going and even
improve and innovate for our patrons.
"We are very proud of this honor," Miller added. "The award, and our
success, is possible because of the incredible work and commitment of our
volunteers and the support, feedback and advocacy on the part of our
patrons. Everything that WTBBL does is truly a team effort - staff,
volunteers, patrons."
Walsh said WTBBL has truly earned the honor.
"This great program plays such an important role in the lives of many
people throughout Washington, and Danielle and her staff take great pride in
providing the best service possible for the patrons. We at the State Library
are very proud of them."
On June 30, WTBBL will host an award celebration event from 10 a.m. to 11:30
a.m. Volunteers and patrons are invited, and Secretary of State Sam Reed
will attend. WTBBL is located at 2021 - 9th Avenue in downtown Seattle.
"I'm very impressed with WTBBL, and I'm sure its patrons appreciate
everything it does," Reed said. "It has many dedicated, hard-working
staffers and volunteers, and this award reflects their efforts. And what a
great honor for Danielle to receive this award at the Library of Congress."
According to the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically
Handicapped, WTBBL was selected based on the following criteria:
· Mission support the extent to which the library reached or exceeded
the American Library Association Revised Standards and Guidelines of
Service.
· Creativity and innovation the extent to which the library developed
new patron services or marketed existing services in an exceptional manner.
· Patron satisfaction the extent to which the library met the needs
of its patrons during the year.
Last year, WTBBL was runner-up in this national awards competition.
