The mission of the Washington State School for the Blind is to provide
specialized quality educational services to visually impaired/blind
youth ages birth-21 within the state of Washington.  While fostering for
a safe and fun environment for students, our purpose is to serve as a
statewide demonstration and resource center and to provide
direct/indirect services to students both on campus and in the students'
local communities. Each employee plays a critical role for the school

Position profile:  

This is a 10 month position at the Washington State School for the
Blind's Health Center.  This position will begin every year in late
August or early September (depending on the commencement of the school
year) and will be non-scheduled during the school closure times of year.
This position is currently scheduled for the evening/swing shift,
however hours may change or rotation may be required with a 30-day
notice.  Under the supervision of the Supervising Nurse, this position
will have, but is not limited to, the following responsibilities: 

 

*	Provide nursing care for the residential and day students at
WSSB through assessment, diagnoses, planning, intervention and
evaluation within the scope of the nursing care plan including but not
limited to: administering medications and treatments, providing first
aid, conducting basic physical assessments, collaborating with
physicians, medical offices, parents etc. as needed.
*	Maintaining Health Center, duties include ordering and stocking
supplies, rotating stock, laundry, make beds, clean and organize nurse
station, prepare monthly medication administration records, perform
monthly medication billing.
*	Communicate pertinent medication and student information with
appropriate staff as needed.
*	Prepare medications for delivery home with students weekly.
*	Precept nursing students from local colleges.
*	Attend science camp in spring.
*	Create and maintain health center documentation.
*	Create and implement health related classes designed for WSSB
students.
*	Obtain certification as a CPR instructor within 3 months of
hire. 
*	Emphasis is on exercising nursing judgment in knowing when to
give or not give medication, when concerns warrant a call to the
physicians, knowing which health care concerns are priorities and which
need direct (or emergent) follow up care.   
*	May serve as medical advisor on a multi-disciplinary team for
the development of an overall Individual Education Plan (IEP) for
students at WSSB
*	Teach students how to care for their own medical needs as
independently as possible, in both formal and informal settings. 
*	Train older students to self manage their own medications
including a training period where they learn about their medications,
side effects, and proper medication administration, perform lock-box
checks and document findings.  
*	Conduct in-class trainings upon request from teaching staff or
Supervising Nurse in order to incorporate health care teaching in lesson
planning.
*	Responsible for ensuring the Health Center is in compliance with
all regulatory policies and procedures and state and federal
regulations.

 

Required Qualifications:

*	Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing;
AND  
*	A valid Washington State license to practice as a registered,
professional nurse;   AND
*	Bachelor's or higher degree involving major study in nursing may
be substituted for two years of experience.

*	Experience working with children and families of children with
special needs
*	Strong communication and listening skills
*	Positive attitude that fosters collaboration 
*	Good written and verbal communication skills
*	Participant should be open to constructive criticism
*	Willingness to be flexible
*	2 years nursing experience (New grads encouraged to apply)
