Hi guys,

Nope...This isn't about baseball or Mexican food, but it is about something
that Seattle Federationists can do after the NFB chapter meeting. How cool
is that?! And, rumor has it that a Federationist is heavily involved in
this event...promoting it and even playing bass for the concert. Here's the
email. I hope some of you can make it!
Jim

Hello everyone,

The official first day of Summer is June 21st, and I think that we should
celebrate early, the weekend before, with an afternoon workshop, a potluck
dinner, and a fantastic evening concert full of good old fashion folk music!
This event will feature Northwest folk duo "The Wanderers!" Some of you may
have seen them at Folklife, either playing at the Fisher Green stage or
being the official MC's for the tribute to Woody Guthrie. Believe me when I
tell you.You ain't seen nothin' yet!

If you are a big Woody Guthrie fan, or if you are just starting to learn
about Woody Guthrie, this workshop is a must! These guys have credentials
and are considered two of the top Woody Guthrie experts in the Pacific
Northwest.

Following are details to the upcoming event. Since this is a house concert,
it is STRONGLY advised that you call and make reservations, as soon as
possible, so that the host has an idea regarding space and food. Also,
please feel to spread the word regarding this Saturday event.
See you there!!

Jim

Carl Allen and Bill Murlin have been performing together for over 50 years.
They are Northwest experts on Woody Guthrie's Columbia River songs. Their
workshops are filled with facts, stories and songs. A concert by the
Wanderers includes many of Woody Guthrie's Columbia River songs as well as
classics from The Kingston Trio, Pete Seeger, Tom Paxton, Terry Gilkyson and
the Easy Riders, and Phil Ochs, among others. And singing along is a must!

Woody Guthrie and The Columbia River Collection-A slice of Pacific Northwest
History

Come with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear, the month of May,
the year of 1941. A 27-year-old folksinger from Oklahoma, by the name of
Woodrow Wilson Guthrie, has been hired by a fledgling federal agency, the
Bonneville Power Administration, to write songs for a movie about the
Columbia River. The movie is to be a propaganda piece, touting public power
over private power. It turns out to be one of the best investments the
federal government has ever made.

In thirty days Woody Guthrie is paid $266.66 and writes twenty-six songs
about the river, the dams and the men working on the dams. How did these
songs get written? What was Woody thinking about when he wrote them? What
has been the impact of those twenty-six songs? Come to a workshop,
Saturday, June 18th, at 4:00 PM to learn the answers to these and many other
questions, as Bill Murlin (late of the Bonneville Power Administration and
editor of The Columbia River Collection) and Carl Allen (10 years as an
Inquiring Mind speaker for Humanities Washington and a Guthrie scholar)
present a workshop on Woody Guthrie and The Columbia River Songs. The cost
for this workshop is only $15. See the website www.thewanderersfolk.com for
some great pix and more information.
Call Jean at 425-747-7655 to make reservations!
