A Message from NIDRR Director
Dear Friends of NIDRR,
I wanted to greet you in my new role as Director of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. It is a pleasure to be here at NIDRR and to be working with such an excellent group of researchers and program managers. I hope you’ll always feel free to contact us about anything related to your programs and/or about ways that you feel we could better achieve our purpose of generating and disseminating knowledge, information, and ideas that enhance opportunities for individuals to live as independent, fully included, and productive members of their communities and country.
There is a lot going on here at NIDRR, within the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) and across the federal government. I am doing my best to catch up quickly. As a long-time Research and Training Center director I must admit I never fully appreciated all it took to make the NIDRR grants programs work. The effort required to obtain input from the field; draft, review, and finalize priorities; complete the intra-government vetting; publish proposed priorities; and eventually publish the final priorities is a long and drawn out process. Without the expertise and experience of the remarkable NIDRR staff, I would not have a clue about how to negotiate all the demands in the process. Like many of you for me the process of obtaining NIDRR funding began with proposed priorities and Request for Proposals. I’m learning how very much goes on before and after that.
Of course, like you I remember well the demands of writing a proposal for NIDRR funding. Those demands are considerable in terms of time, talent and stress. These very substantial efforts demand our respect. There is no better way that we at NIDRR can respect the efforts of applicants than to assure that each proposal submitted to NIDRR is reviewed by a highly qualified, knowledgeable and experienced peer review panel made up of people with the backgrounds needed to accurately appraise the importance and quality of the proposed project.
Because of this I have a request. At NIDRR we need constantly to replenish and expand our pool of peer reviewers. The bigger, the better and the more diverse the pool, the better we can assure that each proposal is fully, fairly and reliably reviewed. As members of the NIDRR community I hope you see participation in NIDRR peer review is an opportunity to contribute to a process that has benefitted you personally while contributing in significant ways to the field of disability and rehabilitation research and ultimately to the lives of individuals with disabilities. With that in mind we hope you will help us expand our pool of qualified peer reviewers. The link below takes you to the NIDRR mailbox. To apply to become a peer reviewer, send your CV to the mailbox, along with a brief statement of interest. We hope you will consider such “jury duty” as a part of your role as a member of the NIDRR community. We hope, too, that you’ll share this invitation with others who you feel have the qualifications and experience to assure that each applicant for NIDRR funding receives the quality of peer review that the required effort deserves. Of course, as always we are eager to balance review panels ethnically and racially, in gender and with inclusion of people who know the lived experience of persons with disabilities. The NIDRR mailbox link is as follows: NIDRR-Mailbox at ed.gov.
Thank you very much for considering this request. I look forward to our work together.
All the best,
K. Charlie Lakin
