Message from Executive Director
Warm Greetings from Angela Theriault! What a colorful and beautiful fall in Seattle! Enjoy the season!
I would like to share some interesting updates and events happening around DBSC with you.
* GREAT NEWS!
The Office of Deaf and Hard of Hearing (ODHH) will continue to support the SSP and Advocacy programs for the next two fiscal years (2013-2015) starting July 1, 2013. The amount of financial support is the same as the previous and current fiscal year (2011-2013). DBSC will also continue its contract for the Communication Facilitator (CF) program. DBSC would like to say "Thank You" to ODHH for continuing to fund these programs, which are so beneficial and necessary to the Deaf-Blind community.
* POLLY MANSFIELD'S MEMORIAL SERVICE
Polly's memorial happened on Saturday, October 13th at St Patrick's Church. More information about who Polly Mansfield was can be found below. The memorial service ran amazingly smooth and beautiful. It was packed with people, including volunteer interpreters and SSPs. DBSC would like to recognize and thank the Care Team (Johnnie Peterson, Merrilee Avila, Linda Bruton, Nancy Wickward, and Rachel Simon) for arranging to set up the beautiful memorial service with Polly's family. For the three weeks prior to her passing, the Care Team provided Polly with continuous support and an effective means of communication through tactile sign language. DBSC also wants to recognize Allie Joiner's effort to advocate for Polly's needs at the hospital and nursery home.
Back to memorial service, Bruce Visser did a wonderful job as Master of Ceremonies and with the creation and development of the memorial program booklet. Many thanks to the Washington State Deaf-Blind Citizens (WSDBC) for recruiting volunteer interpreters; DBSC for recruiting volunteer SSPs, and printing large print memorial program booklets; and to the Lighthouse for Blind's Deaf-Blind program for arranging the location at St. Patrick's church and printing the Braille memorial program booklets. Thank you to the Deaf-Blind Community and Polly's family for bringing delicious food. Lastly, thank you for donating money to the SSP Program as Polly wished.
* SSP TRAINING
We had six participants attend our three-day SSP training at DBSC on October 11th-13th. We would like to say "Thank you" to the four deaf-blind individuals who were willing to volunteer their time to provide hands-on training for the participants that Saturday morning. If you are interested in taking the SSP training, please contact JennyLynn Dietrich at ssp at seattledbsc.org<mailto:ssp at seattledbsc.org>.
* SSP COORDINATOR JOB OPENING

In Memory of Pauline "Polly" Mansfield
With deep sadness, we have lost our dearest Pauline "Polly" Mansfield who was one of our leaders, guest speakers, and advocates in the DB community. She passed away on September 10, 2012.

Polly Mansfield
Polly was one of the DB seniors who inspired our monthly gatherings, such as: field trips, games, and educational classes. She was also our guest speaker for high school ASL students visiting DBSC. She shared about her life experience as a DB person and how she met and communicated with Helen Keller! She spent her years living in Seattle using SSPs provided by DBSC to ensure she had a good quality of life and independence while meeting her needs, such as: grocery shopping, banking, and errands.
She has chosen that contributions to DBSC's SSP program be made in her memory to ensure that we can continue providing SSP services for DB people living in Washington State. If you would like to make a contribution, please write "In memory of Polly Mansfield" on a check payable to DBSC. Or, you may go DBSC online by clicking here<http://seattledbsc.org/support/supportDonate.php>.
DBSC Jail-N-Bail
by Michelle Miles, Board President
We need you for the DBSC Jail-N-Bail!!
What's the DBSC Jail-N-Bail? At the DBSC Jail-N-Bail, volunteer "jailbirds" serve time in the DBSC jail. "Prisoners" are arraigned before a volunteer judge on trumped-up, outlandish charges, such as 'Having a Soft Heart,' 'Impersonating an Interpreter,' or 'Failure to say 'No.' They are then sentenced to spend an hour or so in "the slammer" to raise bail in the form of donations to DBSC. The jail will be set up at St. Patrick's Church. Don't worry, we will have plenty of Bread and Water, so you won't go hungry! You will be contacted by your "probation officer" to make sure you understand your "sentence" and any help answer any questions you may have.
On November 17, 2012, the day of the arrest, our DBSC Police Force will place you "under arrest" at St. Pat's and escort you, the "prisoner," to "jail", where you will be formally "charged" and tried. If found guilty (you can count on it), you, the "jailbird," will be sentenced to raise bail. You will be joining other prisoners in a specially constructed cell, complete with pledge form, telephone or VP, to call friends, relatives, and colleagues. At the end of the sentence, you will be released and receive an official pardon certificate, as well as, a souvenir shirt. The incarcerations will last between 1 and 2 hours. The morning incarceration is from 9am to 12pm and the afternoon from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The "Jail" will be at St Patrick's Cathedral in Seattle.
What will the money be used for? These funds will go directly to support the many hours of services provided to Deaf Blind people each month.
Donations - Raising Bail: "Prisoners" are encouraged to begin raising their bail even before being arrested. Once you complete a few simple steps, you'll be ready to raise money online, offline, or both! If you fundraise online, it's as simple as sending out an e-mail (your probation officer will help with this part)! You can send e-mails to family, friends, and associates asking them to sponsor you. YOU will have your very own "jailbird" page on the DBSC website where you can direct people to when they are ready to make a donation to your "bail." Once you've signed up as many sponsors as you possibly can, get ready to be arrested, you're going to have a wonderful time!
We need many volunteers as well!! Please contact us at dbscjnb at yahoo.com<mailto:dbscjnb at yahoo.com> for more information or to sign up to be a prisoner or a volunteer SSP.
DBSC Holiday Closure
DBSC will be closed on Monday, November 12 (Veteran's Day) and Wednesday- Friday, November 21st-23rd. (for the Thanksgiving holiday).
Donate to DBSC
