Hi,

Thanks for your response. Yours was  the only one that addressed what I had
actually asked about. I have such complicated financial stuff that I really
don't want just anyone handling it. One issue here would be how easy stuff
could make it to the grapevine. I think I really need to find someone
outside of where I am living. I am able to sort stuff out with the KNFB
reader, although I am still a little awkward with it. That does help me weed
out junk mmail. 

I keep telling these feline guys to help me with it; they have PURRfectly
good eyes. They won't go out and find work to help with expenses either.
Stubborn little things! But I am so glad I am still able to have them with
me. 

It would be neat to hear what your kids are up to now. Mine are busy raising
Julian. I haven't seen him as often as I'd like.

Hi Lauren,

These difficulties are most likely to come up when official entities get
involved.  Rather than asking the people who run the place where you're
living, perhaps asking individuals who live there would work better.
There's also your church.  

If you write out a simple letter of understanding setting out the duties of
the reader and your responsibilities and asking the person to agree to it,
then perhaps the fear will go away.  Also, if you want, you can set up a
system whereby you ask a third party to verify anything involving money.
I've found the best way for me to allay worries is to handle all my payments
directly either over the computer or through telephone banking.  Then my
readers aren't writing checks; they're simply reading bills.

My biggest issue has always been deciding which friends should be readers
and which friends I don't want to know too much about my business.  I've
found, though, that any qualms a potential reader might have are cleared up
at the first meeting.

As for whether to pay a reader or look for volunteers, I can see value in
both arrangements.  If you hire someone, it's officially a more professional
relationship.  Some of the most professional and discreet readers I've ever
had have been volunteers.  Paying readers costs money, but they tend to be
more reliable and available.  Again, some of my best have been volunteers,
so it all depends on the person.

I'd say the biggest problem is attempting to get organizations involved in
providing readers.  That has never worked for me; informal networking has
been very successful.  Works better than hog-tying my kids!  I'm about due
to find a reader to help clean out my office clutter.  Good luck.

Hi,

I am having trouble finding someone to help me with my mail. The KNFB reader
does help me identify mail, which helps me sort it, but I am so behind, I
need a human to help. 

The entities here keep saying they can help with this or that, but not with
my mail because it involves my personal financial info. They say this is a
liability because someone could take advantage of me by knowing my financial
info. I am not sure that this liability stuff is true. Does anyone out there
have info to help me get someone to help me with my mail? I've never had
issues about it in the past. But when I was living in Fairfield, the issue
came up and now here in Eugene, it's coming up bigtime.
