Hi everyone, As your rep to the Braille and Talking Book Library Advisory
Committee I thought many of you would find this material of interest even
though it is not specific to the Talking Book program,The state committee
that the library is a part of covers these items and the committee would
like to request that everyone read and request that your state legislators
cosponsor or at least vote for these two important programs. Thank you very
much. Betty Fitzpatrick

Bipartisan Senate and House bills introduced to protect public history

OLYMPIA - A bipartisan coalition of Washington state lawmakers have
introduced a pair of bills in the Washington State Legislature that would
authorize construction of a new combined Library-Archives building to
replace what the legislation calls "obsolete and crowded facilities"
currently in use.

Companion bills Senate Bill 5902
<https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=5902&Year=2019&Initiative=Fal
se> , sponsored by Senators Sam Hunt (D-Olympia), Hans Zeiger (R-Puyallup),
Dean Takko (D-Longview), and Jim Honeyford (R-Sunnyside), and House Bill
2015
<https://app.leg.wa.gov/billsummary?BillNumber=2015&Year=2019&Initiative=Fal
se> , sponsored by Representatives Beth Doglio (D-Olympia), Richard DeBolt
(R-Chehalis), Laurie Dolan (D-Olympia), Jim Walsh (R-Aberdeen), Brian Blake
(D-Aberdeen), and Larry Springer (D-Kirkland), were filed at the request of
Secretary of State Kim Wyman.

Secretary Wyman has said
<https://www.sos.wa.gov/office/news-releases.aspx#/news/1338> her top
priority for the 2019 legislative session is a solution for the
deteriorating and outdated facilities that jeopardizes irreplaceable state
records.

"The vulnerability to fires and recurrent flooding in our State Archives and
the lack of capacity in our State Library place Washingtonians' records and
history at risk of catastrophic destruction and unjustly limit public
access," Secretary Wyman said. "I applaud the bipartisan group of lawmakers
for their vision to move forward with a permanent solution to this
persistent threat."

Both bills received their first readings Tuesday, Feb. 12. SB 5902 was
referred to the Senate Committee on State Government, Tribal Relations, and
Elections <http://leg.wa.gov/Senate/Committees/SGTE/Pages/default.aspx> ,
and HB 2015 is scheduled for a public hearing in the House Capital Budget
committee <http://leg.wa.gov/House/Committees/CB/Pages/default.aspx> next
Thursday, Feb. 21, at 1:30 p.m.
