2018 has been a good year in the NFB of Washington. We have faced challenges and experienced growth. Here are a few of the things we accomplished:

* Had a successful trip to the other Washington to meet with our national Representatives and Senators. Two new NFB W members attended.
* Gained several cosponsors for our national legislation
* Successfully launched our Members At Large chapter
* Ended the payment of subminimum wage is in the city of Seattle
* Took a strong delegation to the NFB national convention in Orlando
* Conducted our first BELL program
* Substantially increased donations to our affiliate
* Held successful fundraisers at the affiliate and chapter levels
* Completed an energizing state convention with NFB President Mark Riccobono as our national representative and had many new members involved in the convention
* Secured sponsors for a state level bill to end subminimum wage is in Washington
* Awarded 2 scholarships to deserving blind scholars
* Are participating in the National Fitness Challenge and the Braille Readers Are Leaders contest

We have much to do in 2019. We will be undertaking initiatives to increase membership, pass state legislation to end the payment of subminimum wages, engage parents and students, increase new members’ knowledge of the Federation and develop new leaders. We are going for a record attendance at this year‘s NFB national convention in Las Vegas and at our state convention in Olympia next November.

You can be a part of this. I invite you to join as a new member or become more active as a current member. Join local or At Large chapters or help start a new chapter in your local area. Bring new people into the organization. We need all of you and those you know. With love, hope and determination we will help more blind people live the lives we want and we will build the National Federation of the Blind of Washington.

Happy New Year to all!

Marci Carpenter, President
National Federation of the Blind of Washington
