I know that the Materials Center used to sell talking thermostats, but I don't know if that's still the case.

As for ranges, be cautious.  Not all ranges start at 350.  Some start at the last temperature that was used while others begin at zero or at a random place.  Most do begin at 350, which is workable.

You can also buy ranges that connect via Bluetooth to a cell phone.  The design was invented for people who want to start or stop the oven while away from home, but being able to use Voiceover to read the range settings is extremely helpful for blind people.

If you can find a range with dials, that's probably the easiest solution.  If the range has a flat glass top, some models have feelable differences between the burners and the rest of the surface.  If yours doesn't, you can easily find the burners by touching them lightly just after turning them on.  I've done it without risk of burning myself.  Once you find the burner, you can place your pot or pan on it correctly.

The technology center at the national office began a documented list of accessible appliances.  I don't know if it's being kept up to date, but whatever has been done is probably on the web.

Hi Philip,

It’s not always easy to figure these things out for ourselves. Part of the purpose of this list is to help each other with tips for adapting things in our environment. Judy and Les have some good suggestions. I don’t know that anyone is manufacturing braille overlays for ranges so DIY is probably the way to go. If there’s a certain configuration that you’re trying to figure out accessibility for let us know and others may have helpful suggestions.
