Washington State Governor's Committee on Disability Issues & Employment (GCDE) is accepting applications for Committee Chairperson through January 21, 2020

OLYMPIA - The Washington State Governor's Committee on Disability Issues & Employment (GCDE) is recruiting for the volunteer position of Chairperson.

This position is appointed by the Governor and serves at the Governor's pleasure for a three-year term (a second three-year term as Chairperson is possible, subject to reapplication and reappointment by the Governor). The current Chairperson's term of office ends on December 31, 2019 and the Committee's Vice-Chairperson will serve as acting Chair until a new Chair is appointed.

The GCDE is a recognized leader in promoting equality, opportunity, independence, and full participation in life for persons with disabilities. The Committee strives, through its 27 members, to represent a wide range of constituent groups, geographical perspectives, ethnic origins and cultural heritage. The GCDE:

  *   Advises the Governor, the State legislature and State agencies on issues and policies that affect people with disabilities.
  *   Monitors legislation to ensure equal opportunity and access to employment, education, healthcare and public services for people with disabilities.
  *   Promotes understanding of the needs and potential of people with disabilities, offering information and awareness training to the public.
  *   Assists in the formation of local committees that promote accessibility for people with disabilities, and can fund projects and initiatives that benefit people with disabilities.
  *   Recognizes employers who demonstrate leadership in employing people with disabilities and provides training and technical assistance to the business community to promote employment opportunities and create awareness of disability issues.
  *   Teaches leadership, citizenship and social skills to high school juniors and seniors with disabilities through a residential leadership program.
  *   Conducts its activities in barrier-free environments and uses appropriate auxiliary aids and services to ensure effective communication.

The primary responsibilities of the Chairperson are to lead and facilitate the Committee's work in achieving its goals and objectives in support of people with disabilities. In fulfilling these responsibilities, the Chairperson oversees all functions of the Committee, including the activities of GCDE's five subcommittees, ensuring that their structure, policies and activities enable achievement of the GCDE's goals and objectives in support of people with disabilities. The Chairperson also delegates to the Committee's Executive Director and other staff the day-to-day management of GCDE programs and other functions.
