British Columbia is experimenting with bike lanes that have mid block bus
stops. In order to reach the bus stop, pedestrians must cross the bike
lane. Although some of them have pedestrian activated caution lights, there
is no way for a blind person to tell whether a bike is passing. It's
completely unsafe.
I'm writing a resolution that expands on this topic (we passed a resolution
dealing with some of this a few years ago.)
Are any of you aware of similar designs in the US? It would help to have
specific examples to make the resolution concrete. Canadian examples aren't
applicable for a US resolution, but we know similar designs are being tried
in many countries, so I doubt a US example would be hard to find.
If you know of any kamikaze bike lanes in your area, please write me at
gabias at telus.net <mailto:gabias at telus.net> to complete the proposed
resolution.
